Hey

I need to change my hosting provider. I currently work with EUKHOST and they are beyond dreadful. The downtime is unbelievable.

Can anyone recommend a hosting provider that is reliable? At the moment I am on a shared package but would be interested in moving to something more dedicated at the right price.

A UK support team would also be great. One that doesn't fob me off all the time!

I use SmarterASP.net, US servers, but they provide me what I need.. In fact never need support as it works... 24/7 support and live chat...

I like SmarterASP as MSSQL, Visual Studio Deployment for my development work and host needs... plus, alternative solution to Microsoft Exchange email.

Hey.

What is it you need from your provider? What is it you're hosting? A Wordpress blog, PHP forums? These details will help us get you a more accurate answer. Price/budget is also another point to mention. With that said, I am happy to go over a few options.

Firstly you can DIY a hosting set up for your web site using a cheap VPS. I highly recommend DigitalOcean. For $5 you'll get 512MB of RAM and 20GB of disk space (which is based on an SSD SAN). If you're comfortable setting up a web server and the additional elements needed for a web server, this is a cheap and powerful option.

The second option is a dedicated server, for those times when you need more power. Again, without a budget or price range, I can't not recommend this avenue. Someone like OVH (if they ever open up to new sales again) or Hetzner (a bit more expensive than OVH, but just as good) will give you a great quad core server with tonnes of RAM for what is, relatively speaking, pennies.

Finally if you're hosting a Wordpress blog or some existing, popular software, then you can consider something like wordpress.com and other professional "Saas" offerings.

With some more detail, I can get you better options :)

I swear by Tsohost. Great uptime. Not over filling shared servers. UK support 24/7 (phones close at 11pm, but you can raise a ticket or email and will probably get a reply within 15/30 mins).

And if you go to the link in my sig you can discount codes and maybe even cash back depending which hosting package you go with.

All the best :)

Are you looking for managed dedicated server? any other special requirement.

I will say dedicated server is best option over shared, as you get full root access with no resource shared by any other customer on the server.

If you want a bargain basement server based on hardware that's up to 5 years old, poor network performance due to constant DDoS attacks and non-existing support then yes, a server located out of the country and generally a bargain basement server, then yes, look at Hetzner or OVH.

If you want a real server (i.e. not cobbled together components in a pizza box) then expect to pay a bit more but get much better support, a much more reliable network and a host that lets you sleep easily at night.

A few good providers, us included, frequent this forum. Other good providers around here are TSO and Astutium.

I did get pretty good reviews about EUKHost and i was thinking to use their VPS service. What packed you were using with them?

It's easy to knock other providers when you run a company of your own. It's not very professional, however.

It is. And there's plenty of other service providers I like and respect, and I cited two in my response.

Then there is misplaced guidance that is likely to result in more bad than good, so I step in.

    Matt

Having worked for two major players in the (managed or otherwise) hosting environment (UKFast and Rackspace), I can confidently say I've not heard of you or the two other options you cited. I have, however, heard of Hetzner and OVH, and I've also worked with their kit for years now without an issue. In fact, I've had OVH staff logging into my dedicated server (with my permission), to help with a kernel issue I couldn't resolve. I did not have a managed SLA with them.

I guess we both have a difference of opinion on what constitutes as good service.

I've had customers move to us that have been down days on end as both providers network's have been DDoSed. The budget nature of their orientation means they are attractive to the botnets and undesirables.

I've seen secret video shot inside one of the two's facilities (they don't allow cameras) showing servers held together with cable ties.

If you're a former racker, you surely understand that you need a good foundation (i.e. quality server, a network not constantly squashed by ddos) to even be able to deliver customer service.

I don't know how big TSOHost are but they run their own datacentre. We're bigger in the US but are expanding fast, 100% year on year.

I did see some tasteful UKFast adverts on the search phrase 'webhostingbuzz' earlier. But Lawrence is widely known for his taste either :)

I couldn't agree more. I can only tell you about the experiences I've had with both providers.

I have no doubt your services are rock solid and worthy of anyone's cash :)

Mr Jones is an... interesting character. Let's leave that subject at that point unless you want to take this private? ;-)

    A side question if I may ?

I currently just use shared web hosting, which includes email etc.

Under what circumstances would I need a service like VPS ? and does that include all the usual applications like email hosting, or do customers have to install that as an extra ?

    Useful thread BTW.

When your website needs more resources that what you have on your shared server then you can consider a VPS which provides higher resources and better performance.

    And it does include emails.

You need to check how much your website use a basic resources like disk and transfer.

You should have in you control panel two bars for this numbers.
Most website even for business user have a shared hosting.
Webhosting for business accounts have a better uptime and more resources then normal, do not take server with unlimited resources.

Good service for business you can get for about £100 pa, that option include a free domain, 24/7 support and lot of space and transfer, you also can have unlimited domains parked, FTP, email accounts etc with it.

N.B. You can use the German site to avoid VAT.

So how does that work then? Their German site says 'Alle Preise inklusive Mehrwertsteuer' = 'All Prices include VAT'

Of course if you are a VAT registered company in the UK you can ask that they don't charge German VAT (assuming their systems can cope with it), but its a bit irrelevant as if you are UK VAT registered you can reclaim hosting VAT anyway.

OK. I just assumed that, but I ordered one from the German site and it was about about £10 cheaper than the VAT price on the UK site.

Have you contact their support team? We believe that EUKHost will help to assist you or migrate you to other server that more reliable.

If you're looking for dedicated hosting, you can take a look our hosting plan at HostForLIFE.eu :)

I use Vidahost and they are very good but I think their service started to slip a little recently. When I signed up average support time was something incredible like 4 minutes. It later slipped to 12 minutes, but they've been recruiting more support staff recently.

TSO host is another that receive great reviews and offer equally good support, but as other have said, they don't use cPanel. Not a huge deal, but I prefer cPanel to some of the other systems out there.

Really it all depends on what you need. Linux server, windows server, addon domains, VPS, cloud etc..

TSOHost and VidaHost are one and the same (both Paragon). They are a good group of guys and will look after you. It takes a lot for a competitor to recommend another but I have no hesitation in doing so here :)
