Buying Job Lots - Advice please

Hi,
Just wondered what you guys thought about the business of buying liquidated/job lot stock and shifting it on.

I have been running on ebay for a few years and in that time I have accumulated some cash reserves. (I have about 10-15k to play with)

I want to work on this cash reserve (I am not a fan of interest, stock market and don't have enough for property).

I'd like to get involved in liquidated stock/job lots. I realise that 10-15k might not be a lot to start in this game, but I'm hoping it will be enough.

I'm not fussy about the products, although automotive is my current field.

In terms of how I plan to shift the stock?

I have a good working knowledge of ebay selling, and a strong seller account, with possible access to ebays featured deals, maybe even a spot on their homepage from time to time. This is one avenue.

I also have good international contacts, specially in sri lanka, india and africa, so export is another avenue.

So with this in mind, my final question really is:

Where can one gain access to a cracking job lot deal?

I have been looking at ebay's wholesale/job lot category, but I feel ebay job lots are often overpriced, maybe because they've already passed hands too many times.

I guess I should add I've never been to a proper auction.

One of my old members of staff does it, left working for me to do it full time. He bought all sorts in auctions and sold them on ebay, what he couldnt sell he would do car boot sales with. Was making good money too

I do it as a side business. Buy a copy of `Traders` magazine and you will be amazed by the choices available.

Before spendinging any money , make sure you check out the company thoroughly.

There are a lot of scammers out there.
Check out The Wholsale Forums - there are lots of tempting offers available.

Agree, most of the stuff in there has already been through a good few hands, all adding their little mark up. I would imagine if anyone knows of any really good sources they will probably be keen to keep it to themselves.

You need to be fussy about the products (your selling them after all), you can't just go into business with 10-15k "to play with" with no plan, no idea what your selling - or where your going to sell it, and expect to suceed.

My advice would be to sit down and have a think about what you want to buy and how your going to sell it, then start over, your sort of trying to skip the biggest step.

Disagree all you like it wouldn't do for us all to be the same.
I agree that there are plenty of pallets of tat to be had, labour intensive returns or slow selling JML style bits and bobs mainly.

I know you're right - market research, analyse, plan etc.

So far I've done ok with my crappy:
check demand, check competition & selling price and then buy as cheap as bloomin' possible.

Maybe this approach has worked well for me because of the nature of ebay.

I'd like to spice things up alittle now,
I'm looking at white goods & electrical (specially flat screens) into sri lanka. If I buy cheap enough here, I know a guy who knows a guy in customs - bob's your uncle, margaret's your aunt.

I agree , life would be boring if we all agreed......

The only way to find good quality items - is by doing lots of research and also contact some manufacturers to see what they do with there unsold items, returns etc.
