Buying .edu links... good idea?

I'm thinking of buying 5 to 10 .edu links on freelancer.com with a budget of £50-200. Is this advisable? Has anyone got experience whether this is a good idea or worthwhile?

Unlikely to be a good idea. Depends what site you are doing it for (are you aiming to rank, bank then tank or is this a proper business?) and how obvious they are.

I'd guess since they're on freelancer you'll be sharing the same footer or sidebar with several other businesses / Viagra sellers etc who also bought the same links.

Ye like JonathanSEO says it depends on what your doing.

If your just looking to blast your way into "payday loans" for a few weeks then maybe it's a good idea. If your building this for the long term it's bloody awful!

Buying links is prohibited in Google SEO Guideline. So from the point of long term, it seems not a good idea. If you are devoted to providing good content on your site, you will get some high quality links naturally.

No it's not. Buying links to artificially improve ranking is frowned upon but there is nothing wrong with buying links to generate traffic. It's called advertising.

yeah but 98% of people who ask about buying .edu links are doing so with the sole intention of them being used to increase their rankings.

I'd happily pay £1000+ for "real" ac.uk links. I wouldn't take freelancer sourced .ac.uk links for free, if they were being sold for £10-20 each. They are clearly going to be spam.

With the price alone, its obvious that the source can just be added to by anyone (maybe a forum, blog post comments or something similar). So in time more and more and more people spam it. It might have counted as a link for the first 3 or 4 people to abuse it.... by the time the 100th person does it its just a dangerous place to have a link.
