As we appear to be having our summer at the moment, has anyone seen any warnings from official bodies and transport bods?
Saw something earlier that suggested people not travel by train tomorrow.
The wrong kind of sun? How do the warmer places in the world cope with railways?

Us Brits have for many years appeared to head off to sunny climes for a holiday in the sun. Millions of us have done it.

Yet we appear unable to cope with heat at home?

We Brits go on holiday to somewhere warm and sunny, get a great tan and have a good time. Yet when not on holiday appear to forget sun protection, appear to have problems sleeping in the heat and whinge its too hot.

Is it only on holiday overseas that the 'cope with sun' gene gets switched on?

Thoughts anyone?

It isn't the heat in this country that causes problems as it's the humidity that goes with it. We're off to a Greek Island in a couple of weeks where it will be over 30 all day every day but the big difference is that it will be clear skies with very little humidity.

Mediterranean homes tend to be built to keep the sun out whereas ours are built to keep the heat in and anyway I wouldn't dream of holidaying anywhere in the summer that didn't have air conditioned bedrooms

There was someone on the radio this morning explaining why the railways were having problems with the heat.

It seems that our railways run on tracks laid on sleepers that are in turn laid on stones which was a system designed a century ago.

Continental railways run on sleepers laid on concrete but that costs four times what ours cost and it's not cost effective to upgrade all of our tracks just for a couple of days a year

Continentals have a similar attitude to drainage, with obvious cosequemces.

I was trapped on a Spanish train overnight once due to heavy rainfall. When I eventually returned home my second floor flat was flooded. It turns out the guy above had been using his terrace drain as a makeshift ashtray/rubbish bin for the previous few months.

The entire night's deluge had taken the alternative root via the staircase.

Quote amusing watching everyone arguing about it and the culprit just shrugging his shoulders saying ya, ya

I am one of those who does not understand the juxtaposition of the words too and hot. Here in the north east I find it pleasantly not cold. I think it is about 26C

Here in the house its 26C according to the thermostat.
Just been to take dog for a walk, bit warmer outside. Was very warm yesterday spending better part of 2 hours in the afternoon sorting stock in a metal container. Needed to use a towel to deal with the sweat.
