Seriously, do not back against Oxford this year. They will be short odds to win though...maybe put them in a double with your Grand National selection ?

Upsets do happen in the boat race...but it would be a huge one this year.

Can someone explain to me why protestors have to mess around with what is a sporting fixture that causes no harm to anyone or anything yet due to that stupid swimmer we now have a half race going on!

We have a set of people who have worked their hearts out all year training and giving up things just to be part of today .... I give in!

Why do I get the feeling next weeks National might just now be on high security alert?

While I don't condone his actions, I'm guessing the guy is protesting that only Oxford and Cambridge are allowed to participate in the boat race. Why not have regional heats and allow the two best crews to participate in the race? While not meaning to stereotype, it would be rather entertaining to watch a new technology school's crew beat out an Oxbridge crew. :)

Why not have regional heats and allow the two best crews to participate in the race? It would be rather entertaining to watch a working-class crew beat out an Oxbridge crew. :)

Steve, the boat race is about tradition and all that it entails - so you would like to do away with this tradition?

Anyhow, the guy arrested is called Trenton Oldfield and this is his blog outlinging why he did it!

On a slightly better note, it would appear that Alex Woods is now in hospital being treated and it would appear he is conscious and aware of whats going on!

If you don't like the boat race, and you certainly don't unserstand it, surely there must be something much more exciting in the USA you could be focussing on ?

There are loads of races where all colleges who row enter. The Boat Race is a particular, historic event, between the two teams. The winner is rarely, if ever, is the best eight team in the UK. A fact that is well understood by those interested in the sport. No other college is in the slightest bit envious of the way this event is run.

Oh...and Universities are not schools over here..how long have you been a fish out of water ?

The swimmer, or my interpretation from to the blog link posted ^^^ is a classic under-achieving nut job who will one day write an article for the Guardian newspaper regretting his action.

Here's something I learned today...10 people a day die by drowning in the USA. Phew !

So is fox hunting - but that doesn't make it right. Sadly, some traditions reflect a previous era in which a majority had a really tough time of things while a small privileged minority lived the life of Riley. To survive, IMO, these traditions need to break free from their roots. Opening up the boat race to other universities would be great way to do this.

Incidentally, the Grand National is another tradition that really ought to change. How many horses has been killed in that race? Two were killed just last year. What possible reason is there not to make Becher's Brook, for example, more safe for the horses? In that case, tradition kills on a regular basis.

Wanna tell us why we have a US based mod on here ? Seems like you cannot take up the the replies on this thread just continue to flame ?

Guess you know as much about horse racing as you do on the Boat Race ? There are much easier targets for you..do you need some ideas ?

Shall we demolish York and Bath? they're old and have like those things..you know..erm..cobbled streets, that's it, eugh they're so horrid aren't they. Hey I know, why don't we demolish all our 500 year old buildings and just kind of, tarmac over it all, you know, like in america? :D

The boat race is between Oxford and Cambridge, if you open it up to other teams there is no point in it any more, there are already dozens of rowing competitions in the UK and the Olympics and World Championships. There are also cadet rowing races for the armed forces.

As for the Grand National i don't agree with the amount of horses injured or killed, it's horrid but i don't see any animals or people being hurt in a traditional boat race between two famous Universities. Thousands line the river banks to watch this race, it would be naff if it was Toshiba Boat 3253253 vs Big Bobs Hot Dogs

Incidentelly how many cows, chickens, pigs, deers, hams ;) etc have been slaughtered this year? Lets just ban meat altogether. A couple of horses dying is admittedly quite unsavory, but in the grand scale of things is irrelevant.

What as opposed to sitting on ukbf 24/7, oh the hypocrisy

What did you do on your enforced holiday from here Mr. This an' That ? I sense one coming my way...reporting a mod to the mods is possibly not a great move :)

Also, I simply cannot stand idley by as these anti Grand National bods get into full swing on here.Where were they with their posts at this years' 4 day Cheltenham meeting (and for the past 80 odd years)? Why are they not protesting at the meat counter of their local Betterbuys ? I know why not...and most on here know why not. I hope none of them are wearing leather shoes...rubber shoes should be obligitory on UKBF and sandals on the 'you know what forum'

Same for Fox hunting, towns with cobbled streets, decent universities instead of rebranded polys and so on.....it's that inverted snobbery that the British are world beaters at. Absolute world beating Little Englanders as others call this nation...yecchh !

I would love the big chaps on here trying to have a conversation with the Oxbridge oarsmen..they would be laughed down the towpath.... is my guess.

And Earl, I want you on parade tomorrow morning on the beach protesting against people shell fishing in Whitstable.

The SIMPLE POINT I made though is that he has the right to his opinion, him making his opinions known should not upset people. I do not always agree with your opinions but you are entitled to them.
Not only that some people seem to have a problem with the fact that he lives in America, so f#*^>$g what :)

I lived in America and cannot see much wrong with that... I think someone from Cornwall living in Atlanta working as a volunteer for Sift on something called UKBF is hilarious though...the Global village.

Whaddya mean you dont always agree with my opinions....you are me aren't you-that was the deal when we split our brain in two ?:|

Wow, Steve, you slaughtering ham in Hull ? :D

Sorry couldn't resist it. An episode of the Simpsons were Homer is day dreaming about ham and he thinks ham is an actual animal. PMSL. Mmmmmm ham :D

“(Lisa) “I’m going to become a vegetarian” (Homer) “Does that mean you’re not going to eat any pork?” “Yes” “Bacon?” “Yes Dad” Ham?” “Dad all those meats come from the same animal” “Right Lisa, some wonderful, magical animal!”"

Cornishman, don't you mind! ;)

This post was a bigger certainty than any horse race winner I have ever backed. Doesen't matter where in the world you track them down Cornish people hate being referred to as English...I used to live in Newlyn and Penzance.

In the 1960's and early 70's Formula one drivers had about a 1 in three chance of being killed each year according to Jackie Stewart...there was never, ever, a clamour as there is very boringly around the Grand National by people who would not know a horse's head from it's tail-and that's being polite.

If horses didnt enjoy it they would not start, you see it happen every week.

Also, with regard to the Grand National and Cheltenham it is very well known (within racing but not at the Sun,Mail, Mirrror or Express newspapers) that making the fences smaller has considerably increased the danger as all horses are now travelling at break neck speeds....

Doing a downer on the Grand Natioanl is a National pastime of course... I should have skipped the bait.

UKBF is not big enough to list all we sell.

We don't sell dreams or 2 quid a go painted mugs.:|

Earl

Earl, I doubt if there is a single person who has been on UKBF for more than a nanosecond who will believe there is any 'we' at your corporate HQ.

Its you and a myriad of personalities..ohh but I do believe you have the equivalent of Arthur Daly's 'Er indoors'...poor soul:)

Despite obviously being an emmet, you got that one right! How would a Scot or a Welshman react when called an Englishman? The very thought is absurd. The Celts are a completely different race, and our languages aren't even Germanic. Despite his good intentions, 'This and That' was lucky to escape without a strike.
