Are blogs the best way to build up traffic over the course of time? Which methods bring you the best traffic?

Well I suppose you have to define best traffic first...Blogs are good for building up traffic to blog sites...if people read them. They are tremendous resource sinks - by definition a blog should be updated on at least a weekly basis, preferably a daily basis with content that is addictive.
Is an addictive blog good at building up traffic to that blog site. Yes. Do people watch Eastenders or Corrie? Does the Pope **** in the woods?
Its excellent it you have something that people want to read, need to read, preferably on a daily basis.

Unfortunately that is a question that cannot be answered, it will completely depend on your niche, the competition strength/volume, how much backlinking etc you are doing....
I love Wordpress - a blog is def a fantastic way to become more visible in the search engines, get your personality across, connect with people....and it is soooo search-engine-friendly

If your after traffic you should seo your actual site.
If you add a blog in a folder on your site that can give you good internal link value but making an external blog linking back to your own site wont have great value as you have to build links to that also.
So your best traffic will be from Search engines.

About 100 a day. You have to attract links though otherwise it all starts to dilute and more articles doesn't equate to more visitors.
You won't get over 200 unless you are adding some value somewhere - just blogging for the sake of it will get you nowhere.
At the end of the day you want targeted traffic that will convert to revenue. The current most visited site on the planet is facebook and I make more money than they do every ten minutes.

The people commenting to my Bing post gove me a good laugh

A blog is just a publishing platform.
While there are aspects of blog software (such as Wordpress) that offers potential benefits over basic content publishing - such as built-in RSS fees, ping, and taxonomy - blogging in itself is not a magic bullet to sales.
As I've said elsewhere, with content publishing, it's not what you have, it's the way that you use it. For any content strategy, have clear goals, define strategies, and measure ROI to ensure it offers an actual benefit.

About 2/3rds of the way down it shows screen grabs from google analytics with industry sector specific averages.

Why are you blogging? Is it really visitors you want or new clients?
As I brian says, blogging is just another way of publishing content. If the content is related to the things people search for then you will pick up traffic. This won't necessarily convert into new business (it's a different demographic).
So if you are blogging for pleasure the number of visitors is irrelevant. If you want new business then blogging isn't the best solution.

Blogging a mainstream product can get you listed under "latest". so long as you internally link from the blog then its a good practice.
Much better to press release an article with links.

Blog is a way through which you can put your business concept more clearly among people and by writing blogs with unique information of people's interest you can get more attention of people and they attract to your site for reply and do conversation with them and thus you can get more traffic.

Writing and building a community around a blog is going to take a long time, with a lot of commitment. If your looking for a quick boost in traffic this isn't going to be the answer.
Only start a blog if your going to carry on producing quality content, stopping in a few months because traffic hasn't picked up will only waste your time.
Also don't write blog posts while trying to stuff in keywords and for seo purposes, write the content that users want to read, find interesting and are going to come back and check your website regularly.

Its really important you dont just write your blog for the sake of SEO, and instead take time creating a really informative, interesting blog in which you update regularly. Jason-TJS advice of keeping your posts varied in content is a great way to show you care and maintain lively discussion on your site. Ive found a lot of companies who may struggle with things to write about in terms of advice etc, find it a good idea to write their opinions of recent news stories related to their business sector. Maintaining this method will most likely improve targeted traffic to your site.
However in terms of an SEO point of view blogs are obviously excellent, friendly ways of gaining more attention to your site. Remember to also use Meta titles and description for your blog page, and add the all important headings and sub-headings (H1, H2, H3 etc..).
Blogs can be a great way of interlinking and backlinking to the rest of your site with the use of relevant keywords, but Sally is right saying dont overdo it. Not only will the search engines pick up on it, it will also most likely read badly and not naturally.
Use some of the great, free keyword tools provided by Google to see which relevant keywords you can use for each topic. Another handy way is doing some previous research and perhaps looking at what your competitors are using.

Blogging is a good way to drive traffic but ultimately you need a strategy in place to achieve results. Lets say if you are promoting services, you can join social media sites such as Linkedin, join relevant groups and share your posts... this way you can reach a very focussed audience and later on may be you can also ask members if they'll be interested in cross-blogging...

Maybe not THE best, but they are fantastic. They are a great way of getting inbound links and scoring on long tail keywords. If you've got the time to commit to writing several posts a week they can be SEO gold. If not you can always hire a copywriter (like me?) to write them for you. Send me a PM if you're interested.
