I inherited 40K from my father and want to start something with it rather then putting into the bank.

I have got IT back ground and willing to do any type of business startup which can generate me some money and slowly i can expand it. I have been looking into different Franchises options but would like to take a advice, what would be the best practice to invest this money.

Many thanks

I would say either shares or start a small business.
I usually recommend property but I think you need at least 100/150k to be able to get started their. But 40k with shares you can easily make 10-15% relatively safe per year, which is a nice 4/5k bonus for Christmas!

Depends whether your life is already sorted in terms of house, pension, aspirational goods etc. or whether this is all the money you have in the world.

£40k can be a lot or next to nothing, dependent upon your position.

Nothing bad about using it to set up house if it would take years to save up £40k but if you have no job, then perhaps better to use it for training or a well thought out start up. It isn't really enough to go open a shop or take on a lease but it is enough to buy stock, set up a website and sell something.

An additional solution will be to create your own personal collection of shares and also offer throughout particular person companies' share straight. Carrying out this can be an interesting and also interesting way to commit your money, since you stick to the actual performance of particular person businesses, even so it's also any very much riskier investment in comparison with selecting a Investment or perhaps Unit trust

The best advice? Diversify!
Don't put all eggs in one basket. In todays economy everthing is changing very rapidly so it would be good to invest in different things diversifying the risk.

Regarding your interest and your passion, I had some ideas that you can use to build a business(but its all up to you in the end).
In IT field, you can:
1. become a freelancer and develop web or android apps make money out of it.
2. You can also make an eBook/book providing some IT programming tutorials.
3. You can engage in Ecommerce!

Agree with Talay - if you've got debts that would make more sense to look to reduce those first.

You could look at peer to peer company investment - but you need to dyor as there are big potential issues with this, also it's not in any tax wrapper yet (next year I think).

I have no idea with Franchises but what does strike me about this route is that they have got to get their slice of the pie as well leaving you having to earn more or take less.

A per one of the other posters - I've never seen anywhere that averages 10 - 15% returns which is "relatively safe"? Even Buffett wouldn't be ashamed of those returns. What he does advice and which could be of use is investing in your circles of competence - i.e what you know about personally and in depth and that will make you money (a lot easier than it sounds of course).

Good luck, be careful out there, there are plenty of vultures willing to take your cash.

"Relatively safe" actually means there is a risk. 40k is a huge amount of money and I think you can't risk all of them by investing it in a single thing. Diversity is the name of the game when it comes to investment!

Have you thought about investing into property in Bulgaria? Three years ago, a friend of mine bought an apartment on the Black sea shore for 35k. Each summer he rents it to tourists and gets more than 5k per season. What do you think about the idea?
