Every time you load or uninstall software the windows registry file becomes cluttered with redundant entries that will ultimately slow your PC or can lead to running problems. Cleaning the registry is an important piece to PC tune up and there are numerous commercial software choices to perform this function. I always prefer, whenever possible the shareware or freeware options.

I've tried quite a few commercial, shareware and freeware registry fix offerings. Overall, the best one I've found is a freeware product 'Free Windows Registry Repair', download link is http://www.regsofts.com/free_registry_repair/updatev18.htm.

Tackling registry junk is not for the uninitiated which is why I've restricted my recommendation to this offering. I've used it safely on PC's running Windows XP and Vista without problems. Scans have found and removed up to 1250 errors.

A close second is another freeware product Regseeker. This requires greater care in use as it is more aggressive then FWRR.

Note that freeware products are usually restricted to non-commercial use but this one is a little gem.

I use Glary Utilities, free, and does the job.

Hi

Thanks for the tip - hadn't tried this utility before. Utilities can be cumbersome relative to single apps. I tried Glary on my Vista PC and it picked up 53 registry errors, free windows registry repair picked up 377 registry entries for safe deletion.

It's usually best to run a couple of apps as one doesn't tend to fix all but FWRR does appear to be the best safe registry repair tool I've come across that is comparable in performance to commercial private use packages.

Is this thread worth keeping alive, if you think so post feedback or suggestions on good freeware you have come across.
