We going to start a company, and we want to be a broker between students and small and medium size companies, and also we gonna do marketing, management consultancy, students comes to us to earn some money, and small companies come to us also because they want consultancy for a cheap price. so we are looking for a good software, like Microsoft accounting myob quicken, but i am not sure which program is the best for us. so maybe one of you guys can help us out with this.

We use Kashflow which is software as a service - www kashflow co uk.

I've used Sage, Excel, Quiken beforebut nothing compares! Easy to use, great support and cheap!

It's not for a large business, ideal for small SME's though.

Their are so many accounting packages on the market and you will get lots of recommendations based on peoples personal preferences, for example I like VT and Solar and recommend these to my clients.

My advice is to speak with your accountant before making any decisions - they will have a full understanding of what you really need from your software, and if you use a package they recommend and are familiar with they will be able to help you when you need support and you may find they will reduce their fees if its a package they work with.

I think you should post that as a new thread in "General". I'm genuinely interested in peoples experiences of using postgrads and the like. I don't see how they can bring any real value with no real-world experience on stuff like marketing.

I know indirectly of a few cases where businesses have hired marketing help, in particular, in the form of final year studunts from local business schools - perhaps on the basis of a couple of days a week or month.

What the students offer is actually doing things - setting up campaigns, writing the letters, following up and monitorin. That's contrasted with the business owners who often think about doing things, but then never get around to it because of other pressures. And many students armed only with theoretical knowledge know more than some business owners.

It's a relatively inexpensive way of getting some help with markeing, and offers the students (a) practical experience and (b) money! It can work very well for both sides.

Of course you wouldn't base a multi million multi media campaign on such an arrangement. It can definitely work in the right circumstances.

If it is somewhat limited to donkey work then fair enough but I am not altogether sure that there will be anything practical on any Uni course that will apply to an owner managed SME.

Back to the OP, for starters I'd avoid all three of the products you talk about (Microsoft Accounting, MYOB & Quicken) because I think they've all basically gone out of business!

Sure, they may still have a bit of support available to existing businesses, but I'd go for something where the supplier is still trading!

Never used Kashflow myself but I've heard lots of great things about its simplicity to use for non-accountants.

If you want a cheaper option, you could take a look at something like VT Cashbook which is free, but is a bit limited in what it can do.
