Backing up emails

After messing about with Orange settings this weekend, and various PC scares previously, I thought that I really should be backing up my emails to an external source, just in case.
Now, I have found them on my hard drive in C/ Docs & Settings folder - in a dbx format :| Should I just save the lot via a USB memory stick, then if I ever need them I can find a dbx viewer programme somewhere ?
Or do I find a free download programme that does it all?
I did a search on previous posts on this topic - there seems to be one member who lost the lot trying to save them with a free programme - that would worry me!
Let me know your recommendations please.

Are you using outlook express for your emails?

If so the dbx file is the one to ensure you backup, yes.

Backup the whole folder. Then if you ever get a disaster, you can re-install your email client and then restore this folder.
