Hi all,

After having managed to break gridlock with my web design company, I do not intend to get stuck with them again and therefore do not intend to go with their 99 pounds a month shared hosting.

I intend to go with Dedicated Server Hosting (there is a reason for it) and would welcome your experience with your current webhost.

Unfortunately it is difficult to find genuine good reviews these days.

Things I am looking to know -
hows is the customer support?
whether you are on managed or unmanaged? (I am looking for unmanaged solution)a
Howz pricing? Any negotiation possible??:)

Thanks in advance

StressedSoul (feeling bit better!!)

How much?!! - that is incrediable. £99 a month for shared hosting, you should name and shame! I can reccommend two comapanies

ICUK - I have a reseller account with them. They are very good, great technical support, very fast response
Gandi - they are also very good. I have a friend who has manages a dedicated server with them, he raves about them. Their tag line is 'no bulls**t' which is quite nice!

I have my own unmanaged dedicated server in a co-location Data Centre.

Not only does this let me access the actual 'iron', it also avoids any hassles with 'ISP policy'

Please PM me if you want specifics

I would carefully consider managed v unmanaged DS. It is very easy to be seduced by unmanaged offers but unless you know how tomanage a server inc installing extra scripts, managing spam filters and more I'd suggest looking at a managed offer. Also bear in mind how you'd feel if the server failed due to software and you have to fix it - especially if this happened at 3 on the morning.

I would recommend Vidahost, you will see that many people have also recommended these guys, there service is very fast and also very good, we have shared hosting package and we have had hardly any downtime in the last 2 years we have been with them.

Regards,

Mark.

recommend shifting your email onto google apps rather than your server, this makes managing the server easier and also reduces load

Thanks for your advice,
Its a start up operation so load may not be an issue for good few years; anyway currently email is hosted separately - i have already paid for a year and so will not be needed until another year. It costs only 14.99 per year with Fasthosts anyway.

I am more after customer experiences of dedicated server providers because I dont want to go with a company and land up in regular problems and stress:D

Fasthosts and "reliable email" don't often appear in the same sentence - would suggest that you revisit that one.

I've had very good experiences with Phil at Openmind hosting. Very good on transfers, set up, customers support (with telephone :) ) , price - in all - I was a happy customer.

Thanks for your post.
I know fasthosts have had recent disruptions but I must say that i have been able to go through to their customer support and they did keep me informed during the disruption regarding what they were doing about it.

After experience with my webdesign company all forms of customer support appear good.

webhost.uk.net give them a try.

Im not with them for dedicated hosting but i would recommend them.
1 of my sites got hacked, they emailed me to inform me.
They then took my site down to protect their other customers.
As soon as i got in contact with them, they put it back online to allow me to fix the issue. They are available 24 hours a day, and ive truely tried...7am, 11pm, 2pm, and on a sunday.

Pricing is good, you may will definately get a better deal than £99 a month for shared hosting!

Wow. Fasthosts support were good???? Your web design company must have been incredible (in a bad way). I have a client with a dedicated server there and I'd suggest you steer well clear.

I'm intrigued why 'shared host' always means web design company too. You can DIY on a shared host. A dedicated server is likely to cost more than £99 a month (blimey that must have been bells, whistles and brass whatevers on it).

We moved from 1and1 to Netwise, to date it's been fine and the support has been there when we needed it even when we managed to "break" it. They took the time to understand what we were trying to do changed things we had set up wrongly and set-up a test version of our site that showed where we had gone wrong and allowed us to easily overwrite it with our live site. Support (and we used it a lot to start with) is quick unlike 1and1 who used to email back days later telling us what we already knew, 1and1 were okay when we had to phone them though.

To Shortlist:
I have heard good reviews on following till now:
Netwise
Webhost.uk.net
Openmind
Vidahost
ICUK
Gandi

And to Stay clear of Fasthosts and 1and1.

Please if anyone else has dedicated server on any other hosting and if they have good experience please share.

My webdesign company has still not delivered the website so this is work in preparation.

I will post my own view of the research I will undertake.

I've had a reseller package with United Hosting (unitedhosting.co.uk) for about 5 years, and they have consistently been really fantastic. I also have a number of clients who are using their basic web hosting, and the support there is just as great.

They offer dedicated hosts, which I don't use, but it is the same team and so I'd imagine they are just as great there.

They have extremely fast response times to support tickets (95% are resolved and responded to in under 10 mins), they will go the extra mile with most support tickets and thoroughly investigate queries and install things for you etc.

If I was interested in a dedicated server they'd definitely be my first port of call.

I'm not in any way linked to them - just a happy customer.

Also I'd add that unless you have good reason, a dedicated managed server is a better option than putting your own hardware in colo, because that has a lot of overheads (coming from having been the person in the server room sorting these problems at 2am on lots of occasions!) involved and simply isn't worth it for most cases.

Best of luck!

I'm not sure you want dedicated servers, they are expensive in both time and money...however thought of a cloud server?

PM me if you want and I'll give you all the details

Thanks for all your help;

Further to my shortlist I have looked into UKFAST and unitedhosting. Unfortunately unitedhosting don't do windows server which i am after. Interestingly no one from sales answered the UKfast telephone but when i call tech support I got the response! its normally other way round!

Jamie, UKfast don't have any prices on their website. How much are you paying?? You can PM if possible please?

Out of the others, I have shortlisted ICUK and their flexible contract is very appealing. I will try to contact them tomorrow and see how things go.

I currently use 34SP and have a couple of dedicated servers with them.

I have been with them around 10 years and started as a shared hosting package and has gradually grown and grown.

Their support is top notch and their support guys always go out of their way to help me out.

Edit : Just had a look and they have a special offer on : http://www.34sp.com/dedicated-servers

Give them a call and speak to Mike, he will be able to advise :)

Well, I've been with FastHosts for the last 3 years with three dedicated servers, and for 5 years before that with shared hosting, and any time I've had a problem or needed their assistance, they've been top notch.

As always there are bound to be horror stories but I find if you deal with them as a person on the other end of the phone without going "OMG YOU'RE CRAP! SORT MY PROBLEM NOWWWWW!" they're much more eager to help...

Plus their control panel (the new one) is superb.

Just my 2p :)
