If you have any on-line business, then it is an imperative for its greatest success with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and the organic search engine rankings it produces. SEO can seem daunting, especially if you are just starting out, but it is a great option for someone who is not so technically minded. There are professional search engine optimization consultants who can assist you to tweak your website but before you hire someone consider these things.
Market Size:
The bigger the market, the more competitive sites usually will be. You will need to look at the number of sites in your market and how active they are with their addition of new content and how highly specific they read. Include in your web page titles, content and image descriptions, highly market – specific terms and keywords. You will need to decide whether hiring an SEO consultant is worthwhile, especially if you are a stratup business.
Market Specificity:
Market specificity relates to the focus on your market where it narrows a description of an item into a specified area e.g. with the nursery if you were selling a rose, the specific market would relate to the varieties in stock. Although these markets can be highly competitive, with good SEO and keywords, you can draw more customers and get more people to your site looking for that particular product.
Fly Solo First:
If you feel confident in using search engines and Web 2.0 sites you will learn the process by which to drive traffic to your site .This may assist with start up costs and aid you in understanding how to precede in the future with your SEO work.
Time Vs Money:
Depending on your understanding of SEO work, you will need to decipher where your time is best spent. Perhaps it is better for you to spend time in another area of your business and hire a consultant to do your search engine optimization work. At the end of the day you are an expert in your field and it is better to get another expert to do the jobs that you don’t want.

Is he deliberately trying to promote himself
No surely not ;)

It's every mods duty to remove spam like this and ban the offeding account. The more you let these type of people/bots get away with it, the worse the problem gets.

Actually I think that this forum is devalued and diluted by the amount of spam (like this!) that gets past the moderators. It could be greatly improved by tightening it up.

Note that this person links to a website that offers no contact details. That is always a warning sign. Note also that he posted three new topics within seven minutes yesterday that were all self promotion. They are all still there. They do it because they get away with it.

For info UKBF rules are...

Spamming
Spamming is entirely prohibited. Spam includes the posting of non-relevant content, URL links, repetitive posting of nonsensical posts, and unauthorised advertising within the forums. We request that you report any spam immediately to the moderators by clicking the ‘Report Post’ symbol in the title bar of any post.

Bang on. I report spam on here but I think I'll stop, it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Yeah there are LOADs of threads started by spammers in here... their first post is not an introduction but "can anyone recommend a good xyz service?" or similar ... they usually get lots of replies so it becomes a legit looking thread before associate replies with "yeah try spammyScuzzBucket.info" or they add a signature link somewhere down the line...

I have a theory..........

More threads = more users and more info = bigger forum = higher rates for advertisers.

I think leaving spam is a deliberate policy from Sift.

Could be... threads seeded by spammers often get really useful replies...

I also report spam on a regular basis but this is never acknowledged and more often than not there is nothing done about it. It's a shame really because otherwise this is a good forum.

I was a member of the FSB forum. This should be the primary UK business forum but it is run by people who haven't got a clue what they are doing. They are a total bunch of amateurs who do not know how to run a forum, which is a shame because they had a head start on everyone else with their credibility rating. I just checked and they have had no posts in their member's only forum for four days. In the open forum they are lucky to get a dozen posts in a day. It will fail soon due to lack of interest.

I also subscribe to Webmasterworld as a technical forum. This is probably the most conservative forum on the Internet and one of the very best. They have lots of moderators and in some of their forums ALL new threads have to be vetted by a moderator before posting. In the others the members self police it very effectively. No links at all are allowed. That would be the best solution in here - no links outside of a controlled and specified signature format.

It is very disappointing that a commercial forum like this that accepts advertising and takes fees allows this to go on. They should be able to deal with it.

(OK, I know I am going on a bit but it's a sore point of mine.) :(

It's counter productive for UKBF if they alienate regulars.

d

Doesn't it depend on your outlook?

More threads, more members has to equal more money, I don't think Sift give a flying fook about regulars.

If they deleted all the spam and cr*p from this forum, it could well halve in size, that's gotta effect income revenues. This forum isn't like a lotta other forums which are run by people who care about what they do, this forum is run for profit. You only have to look at the TAS forum to see that the people who advertise here, (TAS paid for this forum section) don't have a clue and are probably just going on high user numbers and thread numbers, thinking that is a good thing.

Guys, get a grip, there is no conspiracy going on and no deliberate attempt to fill these forums with spam. It is just a simple case of it being a very popular and active website that happens to rank well on Google.

I have just had a look in the reported posts section of the forum and there are no outstanding reported posts left un-actioned. Each mod receives an email notification of any reported posts and one of us will respond as soon as physically possible and deal with it.

I also report spam on a regular basis but this is never acknowledged and more often than not there is nothing done about it. It's a shame really because otherwise this is a good forum.

In all honesty, it would be impossible to acknowledge each and every reported post that we receive and they are all actioned as seen fit by the moderator that picks it up. Indeed, I myself have already deleted a number of posts made by the op.

It is very disappointing that a commercial forum like this that accepts advertising and takes fees allows this to go on. They should be able to deal with it.

As I said above, all reported posts, plus any spam/self promtion that we ourselves find whilst browsing the forum is dealt with as soon as is physically possible. The moderating of the forum is done by the voluntary moderators on the forum and not by Sift and at no time has Sift given us any instructions that give any weight to the idea that Sift are happy leaving spam.

One last thought, one man's spam is another man's roast beef dinner.;)

I will leave this for a bit then remove the entire thread as it clearly is unacceptable to some members.

Looking for an answer?

We know the answer to the meaning of life, we solve murder mystery crimes over 200 years old, we sell any car and cash your gold at the best prices, we know how to stop the ash cloud from Eyjafjallajokull and demonstrate a UK without a coalition government. We also know how to abolish vat and income tax whilst wiping out starvation globally, and as a side effect we all win the lottery and don't have to work ever again.

Ray, I don't understand your statement to whom is this unacceptable?

The good people in this thread are only commenting on something which is potentially damaging to this forum. Most of us who are discussing this are active members who regularly give our time for nothing to help other businesses. That is why I get angry when I see spammers being allowed to post in here and devalue the forum. Why on earth would objecting to this ever be considered unacceptable and why is this considered a taboo not to be discussed?

I regularly see people posting inane comments in here and it is quite obvious that all they are doing is link dropping. Do you think that is acceptable.

One last thought, one man's spam is another man's roast beef dinner.
That is seldom the case. Spam is spam and easily recognisable to those of us in the business.

Actually one of the problems in here is that the forum allows such spammy signatures. Opportunists come along and think, "Wow, what an opportunity! A forum that actually encourages spammy signatures. I'll have a piece of that."

Here's a word of advice... apply strict controls over the signatures that people are allowed to use and much of this would stop. Make signatures three lines...

Business Name (strict)
Single Website Link
Slogan of no more than eight words.

I think that would add much more credibility to this forum.

I think you have mis-understood, I was talking about the OP not the ensuing discussion.

No, certainly not and anything that is reported does get actioned accordingly, however it is a very subjective area.

As this discussion has generated a fair bit of interest and it would be a shame to lose it entirely, can I suggest that you start a fresh one in the feedback and help section of the forum.

I know that Sift are more than willing to consider any suggestions for improvements of the forums if the feeling is strong enough throughout the membership.
