Hey!
I'm currently working as an apprentice for a payroll company. I've worked there for 1.5 years now and I'm really lucky to be working for a company which rewards its employees so well.
Even my family and friends have said I'm really lucky to be working there, as my perks include: free healthcare, wear own clothes, discounts on loads of shops, lavish quarterly parties and team building exercises, and occasionally donuts and cakes.
The people, on the other hand, are exhausting and toxic. The team that I belong to have their own friendship group which excludes myself and three others - although I am the only apprentice out of us four. They are loud and I often find that they get paid just to talk with eachother without doing much work. They also talk behind other team's backs and are VERY hypocritical. Most annoyingly, they have extended cigarette breaks that surpass the amount given by the company, and leave work to go to the shops for up to an hour (sometimes more) and STILL have their lunch breaks. The company did address the latter, however it is still ongoing.
I don't even know what our managers really do to be honest, they just sit and talk to eachother, smoke, and go to the shops during work hours.
I have made so many attempts to try and talk and befriend with my colleagues, but they really don't make it easy - they tend to either ignore me or kill the conversation by starting a new one with someone else. Sadly I sit next to the most irritating colleague who does this to me: I'll try and say something, she'll rudely say "What?" And I'll repeat myself then she just shrugs and says "ok?"
After 18 months of working there, my team STILL haven't taught me the essentials on how to do the tasks that were underlined in my offer of work, so all I'm really doing at the moment is answer the phone, reply to emails, and a couple other menial tasks. Take in mind, my apprenticeship was only supposed to last 13 months (due to external issues with my apprenticeship provider, this has been delayed numerous times).
Not only this, I am concerned with the legitimacy and legal issues with my company. Recently, when a worker has asked for a manager they have told my colleagues to "pretend" to be the manager, so they don't have the answer them... There are other issues as well which includes lying about who the real company directors are in the public eye, and others that I unfortunately cannot reveal.
In regards to myself feeling excluded to my colleagues, I asked for a private meeting (one-on-one) with my manager, but she ended up including my supervisor as well without telling me beforehand, which made me feel on edge as she is best friends with the rest of the team. After telling my manager I felt like I was being targeted by her, she shut me down and called me "petty," which led me feeling miserable for the rest of the week.
HR are unreliable, as this has been going on for so long, and they've had multiple reports regarding these people in question and have done nothing to my knowledge.
I no longer enjoy my job, nor the people I work with. But at the same time, I dont want to lose out on all these amazing perks that the company offers. What should I do?
Ordinarily I would've thought to hold on a bit longer until the end of the apprenticeship, but I was supposed to finish 5 months ago so they're not very reliable either.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
