Anyone Using Nextcloud

I am getting fedup of paying £££s to Google every month, especially as one account/4 users is for my family who do not use a scratch of the features it offers.

The only viable self hosted & open source version of G Apps is Nextcloud - anyone know of any others?

Do/have you used Nextcloud? Is it worth it?

FYI, I run 4 core Google accounts with my domains underneath, some as aliases and some as sudomains, so the costs rackup. I like the connectivity of file storage and emal together and, whilst I do use their office suite, I only do basic stuff on it.

I hve no issue with the server setup and maintenance - once up and running, it will be easy to keep it going!

What do you feel is a reasonable amount to pay for cloud storage for documents ect

    A business
    3 employees
    8 regular sub contractors
    1 small yard
    small office
around 25 transport document s per day saved to storage

    Interesting question.

Depending on the service level, based on 3 users, Google would be about £15--20 month.

I am looking at about £150 and on personal account/domain I am running out of data storage.

I could run a simple Nextoud server for £10-20 a.month and have dozens/hundreds of users.

If just email/calendar, Scalix is another option....

Is your plan to host on a server in your home/office or in a hosting provider?
I use Synology for local storage including backup and it can also backup to cloud accounts, but I don't use for email, for which I mostly use Google.
I was lucky enough to get grandfathered rights for 10 accounts for my personal domain and pay for one account for my business. I do find the annual plans are better value than monthly.
When I was investigating options for our church, I ended up with Zoho which may be worth a look too as it can offer much better value options if your needs are simpler, though its not perfect and it may well be that a hosted NextCloud is your best option.

I remember experimenting with OwnCloud (NextCloud was forked from it) many years ago for a possible home-office server but went with Synology instead as it was a much better fit for my needs.

I have experimented with it, but not actually used it in production as it were. It seems sound to me.

It's something you can use as much or as little as you choose. As you say there are no additional costs per user.

And a key thing is that you are in full control of your own data. It is not lodged with a third party.

Best of luck if you go with it, but do make sure you set up good backups.
