Hi all
Has anyone here tried posting leaflets yet and had any success?

Im planning on posting a leaflet throughout doors across teesside (middlesbrough)

In a money saving scheme, I plan to post them myself.

I just really want to know if any of you have tried it.

Any how many are your planning to deliver

This is not any easy task

I run a community magazine happy to place advertisement in there for you

It really depends. My girlfriend teaches French and did a test run with 100 flyers through local letterboxes. That got her one new pupil within a day. I've heard 1% is a fair return if you offer something useful to home owners. It would be rubbish for, say, a Web developer :)

She's now printed 5,000 of the damn things!

Delivering isn't too bad, just do a bunch at a time, with a friend, so it's not too boring.

We have done our spell of doing leaflet drops, we found we got more return on business premises than residential homes. Think they are a good idea, but vital you get your message across on the leaflet without too much information. Lots of Luck!

leaflet drops can and do work.
You need to make sure you target the right audience.

with selling property you may find that not one of the leaflets you post has hit anyone who is looking to sell.

I would look at an advertisement in the local paper in the home section most have a certain night of the week

I tried posting postcards advertising my portrait sessions about 4 months ago and had no responses. Alternatively, a card in my local newsagents has been fantastic.

It seems we all have mixed responses on this subject but it helps. I never thought of the newsagent things. I will have a try at this.

Can i also ask if you think i should have a free option or charge and how much would you spend?

If the product is right for the market and the message is well written they can work well.

Repetition seems to increase the response rate.

You must have a tracking mechanism.

Spending all day pushing flyers through letterboxes seems like a poor way to spend your time - get someone else to do it.

Try a test run of about 200 flyers and then track the return, try a different headline on your message and try another 200 - repeat. Initially you miss out on the economies of scale on the printing but this will let you test your message to see what works. You've got to keep beating your best response until you have a flyer that gives you a positive return on investment - ie the profit from the sale (or maybe lifetime value - you have to decide) is greater than the cost of getting it.

I haven't done this for many many many years, but we used to get a really good response rate from postcard adverts in newsagent windows, but that was around 20 years ago...just a thought and far less time consuming.
Think walking around the community with a white stripe across ya face prob didn't help :p

I thought I should just mention - the rate of return for the chap that gave us the idea is around 50 per 1,000, with about half turning into actual work - he does carpet and upholstery cleaning in the home, and leaflets every couple of months in the entire area.

One key thing is to save money on things like printing. Interconnect IT is high end, so our printing costs are high. When my girlfriend wanted her flyers done I went to our usual place... where they quoted hundreds. Instead went to a printer that specialises in cheap bulk printing where 5,000 A5 flyers cost something like £29 all done including pdf proofs (real ones if wanted!). Quality isn't amazing, but then it doesn't need to be.

I think success with this sort of thing really does depend on the target market, the offering, and even time of year. My g/f's French Lessons are particularly interested to French holiday home owners. Consequently we'll be going for the middle class, reasonably well to do areas. No point targeting low rent areas with this - especially at £20 per hour.

Sorry Darren - the company is called Eclipse Print & Design in Wallasey. 0151-606 4500

A nice lot. The printing's nothing amazing, in my view, but where you need to keep the cost low it's excellent.

Does this company have a website?

The design and call to action is the most important element of a Leaflet/Flyer IMO. Most get that wrong - which is why the campaign fails.

PS

I too would be interested in a printer that can do 5000 A5 in full colour both sides for 0.5p each - as that is less than the cost of the paper :)

(and even very cheap B&W copiers are 0.5p per A4 PLUS paper)

I monitor the online prices of the leaflet printing specialists and the price range is nearly always £95 - £125

I did 5000 flyers and got 8% back and took me 6 hours work, I think it is worth the time

Hi to you.

Had a look at your website and what areas are you thinking of doing.
I along with my wife run a leaflet distribution company, and our rates
are competitive. We also provide you with an independant backcheck to prove to you where your leaflet was delivered. You can chose your area
or we can help with choice. If you are intrested why not pm me for more details.

When we drop 5000 with the local paper we average out about a 0.04% response.

Which is still quite a good retern on the cash spent

Hand delivered on their own in batches of 100 in prime locations it hovers around 1% ish

We sell domestic heating boilers.

I did 5000 flyers and got 8% back

We'd seriously struggle to cope with an 8% response on 5000. Though it would be nice to get 400 phone calls in the space of a couple of weeks!

Sorry to go off topic - but what areas do you cover?

Also, as one of the largest leaflet printers in the UK, I am looking for leaflet distribution companies to work with.....

Oh it's not full colour at that price. Just grayscale.

Still cheap. I was astonished because the first quote I asked for from them, for a slightly different project, was for either 30,000 or 50,000 (memory is failing!)... and it was £210.

The paper is, it has to be said, cheap and nasty. We're not talking about selling luxury products here, however, so I reckon it's just fine and dandy.

I agree with Peter, each industry has a differernt response rate, and you must know the response of your industry. You first test then use the results for your main campaign. Doing it yourself is hard work though. I've done 1000's myself Its not easy going at all

I was thinking of having a go delivering some for local computer help but now this has appeared in the papers which prompted a discussion on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 with people complaining about them. Think I might leave it a few days...
