I want to purchase clothing from that site, maybe someone can tell me what to stay away from, or recommend a decent wholesaler? I'm not after branded clothes, I am selling them under my name. also, the shipping costs from what I heard are off putting to say the least. I'm looking at about 1000 items to start with. any advice appreciated. thanks

There has been much discussion on this forum regarding Alibaba and a lot of it is not flattering. Most of the suppliers listed identify themselves as manufacturers, even if they are not.

I never recommend that site to my book buyers, instead I refer them to a few sites I know to be safe. In fact I see many different sourcing sites mentioned on the forum, but I have never seen anyone refer to the sites that I recommend as safe.

1,000 items (Chinese suppliers always refer to pcs., not items) would be considered a small order, but you should be able to get a manufacturer to attach your own brand labels. You may have to agree to pay for 5,000 or 10,000 woven or printed labels, and you would have to bear the jacquard cost, which could be a few hundred dollars.

The manufacturer would hold the remainder to use on subsequent orders.

You should ask for a quote FOB. Make sure they spell out FOB where??? I have warned in other posts that although international shipping conventions cover shipping terms, called Incoterms, many Chinese suppliers apply some of those terms loosely. Make sure that if they quote FOB it does not mean to them Ex Factory. The Incoterm for Ex Factory is EXW. There is a sticky on the subject but that is no help to you if the suppliers carelessly, ignorantly, or deliberately interpret the terms differently to the correct meaning.

If they quote EXW, or FOB factory, you will incur inland transport and other costs which could make the freight very costly.

Without knowing the type of clothing I am only guessing, but if they are bulky you might find freight cost a problem. There are UK based freight forwarders who advertise on this forum, and I would suggest you ask them to quote freight and other costs for you.

For them to do that, you will need:
1. Total weight of packages and the quantity.
2. All dimensions of packages .
3. Nature of the goods.
4. FOB point. That is the port at which they will be loaded.

If the clothing is made of leather, it may be economical to ship them by air. Just in case you are considering leather, take note that many Chinese clothing manufacturers will identify their products as leather, but they are in fact Polyurethane, or sometimes PVC. Some will state PU Leather, but others simply state Leather.

Before you finalise the order, make sure you negotiate payment terms. The most common terms for an initial order would be 30% deposit, remainder on shipment.

Quality control can be an issue. You must obtain samples before placing a full size order. If you want a range of styles, you will need to order samples of each. Ask the supplier to send these by air courier, but you must have a door to door quote before you finalise the sample order.

If the value is less than £135, duty will not usually be collected. If door to door, the courier will handle the clearance for you.

This post is not exhaustive, but I do not know how much you know about sourcing and importing.

Hello there,

Frankly speaking, it's not the best way to purchase from alibaba.com for 1000 items. Most of them are manufacturers. They're only interested in thousands of pcs per style/order. I guess 1000 items include hundereds of styles, right? So it's not a good way to buy from the manufacturer. On alibaba, there are not so many wholesalers. So their prices are critical high.

For the freight, it's better to ship by air as your shipment including hundereds of styles. As I know, the rate is about US$3.50-US$5.00 per kilo depending on your destination.

We're professional in this field. We also run a small factory in China. If you need any further assistance, pls feel free to drop me a PM.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.

B. rgds,
Frank

Alibaba is good for big quantity, small quantity cost alot, especially on transport
There is a risk of getting unexpected low quality goods, they will offer you lower quality no matter what unless you are there yourself
Always pay with Escrow, at least you are 100pc you'll get the product, but that doesn't mean the quality.

Many factories in China had registered in Alibaba, they usually are small and medium-size business. they can provide the high quanlity and low quality products. surely the price is different.

Other have many factories do not registered in Alibaba, because this B2B need the membership fees, and add year by year. but they can provide the good service including the good quality as well.

Few Chinese businesses like to receive payment via escrow. When negotiating with suppliers it is necessary to take care regarding payment methods. If suppliers ask for payment via Western Union, that gives cause for concern.

On small shipments, payment is usually negotiated on 30% deposit with order basis, balance 70% on dispatch of goods. If you have good negotiating skills and have made the right initial approach, you may get the supplier to accept 50% deposit and 50% on receipt of goods. There is a trick of the trade that I teach that encourages suppliers to accept such terms, but very few people know about it.

It is far better to thoroughly research suppliers, and for that I list in my book a number of sourcing sites that I know to be safe. You need to make direct contact with manufacturers for the best prices, even on very small quantities.

A high percentage of suppliers on Alibaba claiming to be manufacturers are not.

Freight cost on small quantities are expensive if you buy from wholesalers or dropshippers, but if you buy direct from the factory you will find that freight cost is much more bearable because of the substantially higher profit margins you can make.

China is not really the best place to buy clothing. You can obtain better quality and lower prices in other countries. On my last visit to Thailand, I had two suits and some shirts made to measure, and the quality far exceeded what is available made to order in China.

Depending on the type of clothing you are wanting, there are good manufacturers in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), and a place that few importers know about - Fiji.

Sourcing from some of these countries may not be as easy as it can be from China, but I teach how to do it. There are reliable and safe ways to locate the real manufacturers in those countries.

There are precautions needed when dealing with Thailand, but the other countries I mention are very "user friendly."

Hi Culian,

Thank you for inquiring about Alibaba. If you are looking to import smaller quantities, you could have a look at our sister site aliexpress.com, which specializes in small order quantities. In fact, you may well find that some suppliers will ship the goods for free or at very low costs.

In terms of finding a wholesaler, we would recommend using our Customised Sourcing service: Instead of trying to find a supplier yourself, you can post a Request For a Quotation form and let our industry specialists match the right suppliers based on your requirements. You can find this service by clicking here: http://bit.ly/CustomisedSourcing

Please always do conduct due diligence when making transactions.

Kind regards & happy trading,
The UK Alibaba Team

Remember Alibaba is not a shop it is simply a means of networking. The bottom line is that Alibaba is only as good as its suppliers.

When importing from China there is a big fat grey area that most people don't see which is the process between a product request and a good looking end product safely arriving at the destination.

The suppliers are there to make money and there are lots of ways things can go wrong through outright scams, cost cutting or just sheer laziness (latter is the most common in my experience). Even if the supplier has the best intentions, there are often poor assumptions made especially when it comes to quality.

Best find an agent/purchasing company like ours who are accountable for delivering to your expectations. Unless the item is very, very straight forward, each order is a project and there is no way I would ever do it directly. Percentages are very reasonable for the work that is required on the China (or wherever you buy from) side.

This isn't an issue exclusive to Alibaba. The same issues apply to all suppliers even the ones you rub shoulders with at trade fairs. Alibaba just gets a bad name because it gives easy access to all kinds of suppliers and people expect things to arrive like the items they find on shelves of shops at home which just often isn't the case.
