Any idea how much a data list will cost me?

With e-mail lists the price will be different for 'opt-in' e-mails, ones that you can send to without being thought of as overtly spamming, or just e-mail lists extracted from scraping & directories.
It isn't actually spam if you send an unsolicited e-mail to a public e-mail address of a business (rather than to an individual person), but you have to be a bit careful about getting a spammy reputation anyway

Hi, I have bought lists from many data suppliers for many different clients across a range of sectors, including the Exhibition sector, and as a rough guide you will pay between 20p and 35p per individual contact. 20p will get you a name, job title, address and maybe either a phone number or email. 35p will get name, title, address, phone and email.
Depending on what you want to sell, choose your company carefully. If the product you are selling is a substantial purchase, about £5k or more, then you should think about getting more information when you buy the data. For a it higher cost you can also get the company's yearly turnover in £s and/or the credit score (a basic Good, OK, Poor, Unknown type rating) which will help improve success and cut out time wasters.
If you want a few good companies try MarketingFile or Electric Marketing. Marketingfile is good option to start for your inquiry - they use Dun and Bradstreet lists (very good quality) and price is good too.

I have quickly ran the numbers for Exhibition contractors for you and we have 1046 records with a direct email address. The cost is £110 per thousand records.

I just want all the UK exhibition contractors, I have no idea how many there are so I cannot give you that figure can I?

There's no such thing as buying an 'opted in' email list. If the recipient doesn't know who you are and isn't expecting an email from YOU then you're potentially spamming and potentially breaking the law.
Even if it's a B2B list you still stand a very good chance of getting yourself blacklisted if you mail to a list you've bought. Your 'quality data provider' doesn't carry the can and it's not them listed on every spam block list in the country. Don't take their word for the quality of the list.
It's a quick way into a market but you need to be fully aware of all the potential consequences before you set out or you could easily waste money on a list and find it costs you more in the long run than it was worth.

2. personalise the emails carefully so it at least looks like you're caring about your spam!
3. send properly - and not by pasting email address into the To: field of a mail client!
4. send slowly and monitor the results and death threats as you go
5. do split-run testing if you're unsure about your subject line and content

Our B2B data IS opted in and telephone verified. All data is also screened against the TPS and CTPS.
The main thing to point out is that we are carefull with the data we put out. Bluey01 purchased a very specific list a one that has a direct link to his business, therfore is of potential interest to the companies on the data set. Unlike other data suppliers we do not sell the same lists time and time again which ultimately results in unsubscribes and companies reporting spam. We ring fence the data so it is not supplied to another company selling the same product or service within a 3 month period.

It's good that you take care over your data. Most do not. I've seen far too many people buy inappropriate lists and land themselves in hot water. But this is the thing with data - it's like mining, there is gold in there, you just have to know where and how to dig or all you'll pull out of the ground is s**t.
Forgive me for being old and cynical though but I still can't imagine anyone knowingly opting in to having their details sold to anyone who wants to buy them. I'd love to know what wording you use.

On both sides. All I'd say is its the best £110 i've spent recently!
3 days in and £800.00 profit so far, it will tail off of course but I still get responses to emails I sent years ago.
I keep mails short, polite and to the point, plain text and to a specific target market who use my services, everyones a winner surely?
