How come its can take several months to get a site indexed and noticed in Google?

It was just a general question, i am about to adjust the key words in a few of my sites to increase rankings. Just wondered why that work took so long from execution to results?

Oh I see.

I can't answer that question but you can see on page changes take effect in a matter of weeks.

Once you have made the changes try link to the pages with changes from fresh content to get them indexed faster

There are some who say that sitemaps can potentially be harmful to a site and you better off without one...

Authority sites can add content and it will be indexed within minutes. Crawl rate will depend on many things including authority and the frequency with which new content it added to the site.

Have you tried the Fetch As Google tool?

It's not so much indexed as noticed. Domain age is something that's kind of serious. Some people think domain age is more important than on-page optimisation for competitive keywords. I know...

There's also other huge factors like quality of links, linking root domains, relevance of links, strength of your competition and to be fair, a whole lot more.

The term competitive is thrown around a lot.
My definition of competitive is terms and brands with high competition - Loans, Flights, insurance, holidays, Mortgages, hotels, football, tickets..... etc
But then there is competitive terms with less traffic which are more sought after like personal loans, car hire, compensation claim.

New terms like PPI would have had hardly any traffic before it became popular - now it is a competitive term, but I would never put it on par with Loans.

Google's believed to have a 2 tier algorithm. Competitive algorithm and uncompetitive. Anything that gets around 1000 searches a month (arbitrary, I think it's lower) gets the competitive version. This is because it's not reasonable to expect "David Beckham doing the limbo around a camp fire" to have the same external citations as "David Beckham".

Is there not a difficulty formula for key words, now please forgive me if i get this wrong but

Competition / number of times searched = difficulty in getting the KW to top of google rankings?

Could be the other way around.

I don't think search volume can be related to competitiveness without having a deeper look into the desired phrase but I'll let Aaron and co do a test on that

I would say it is very easy to get indexed by Google, and it would happen naturally. You can certainly speed up this process with google webmaster tools, and this kinda talks you through the process and really makes it easy.

It is at what position you get indexed that matters, for the search terms you want to rank for! I have noticed your website will start off higher than it should for a few days, then disappear for a few days then it will return in it's rightful position.

Then it is just a matter of pushing it up the rankings now this is what really matters right! There are MANY ways to do this, but the first step is knowing exactly what key words or phrases you want to rank for.

Ranking for terms on the other hand is a totally different question. Which i don't think anyone can guarantee. It could take 3 weeks it could take 3 months all depends on other factors mentioned previously.

Stoo - i have to agree with your second paragraph. I haev noticed that with 2 or 3 newly created websites. However for existing sites that haven't had any SEO this isn't the case.

Yes true, good point, i will be adding a newly created PDF soon on ONPAGE SEO and also some good Marketing ideas.. this is a good place to include my knowledge of the last few years and my success at the "little fish" websites, and also ideas for bigger websites too.

This is true. In fact, some people may say their site hasn't been indexed when they really mean they can't find it in the first few pages of Google.
