You should find it fairly difficult not to get a site indexed by Google unless you specifically block the engines or you don't like to in any way.
How long did you wait?
A brand new website can be cached and index with in a day if linked well.
How come its can take several months to get a site indexed and noticed in Google?
Google's believed to have a 2 tier algorithm. Competitive algorithm and uncompetitive. Anything that gets around 1000 searches a month (arbitrary, I think it's lower) gets the competitive version. This is because it's not reasonable to expect "David Beckham doing the limbo around a camp fire" to have the same external citations as "David Beckham".
Enjoy your definition.

Oh and myself.
Indexing shouldn't take anytime at all.
Ranking for terms on the other hand is a totally different question. Which i don't think anyone can guarantee. It could take 3 weeks it could take 3 months all depends on other factors mentioned previously.
Stoo - i have to agree with your second paragraph. I haev noticed that with 2 or 3 newly created websites. However for existing sites that haven't had any SEO this isn't the case.
