So as many on here will be aware Skype has basically been down all day.

For me this is a problem as I only use Skype to communicate.

So what alternatives are there?

I need a plan B for when this happens again!

thanks

There are loads of alternatives, the issue is getting the people you want to talk to on the same service!

This roundup should give you some places to start (Had to break the link up to post sorry)

Whats app is a good alternative as most people has this app on their mobile phones. You can make calls for free with anyone who has 'whats app' downloaded on their phone even abroad. All communication is without charge.

I was always under the impression whats app was like a kids version of fb

I will have a look as I know at least it is commonly used...

Skype is alive, but will check out whatsapp as a back up

Whatsapp, Viber, FaceTime (with iPhones) or Google Hangout for video-based calls.

Facebook messenger has a video call function too.

I've used Google Hangout before, and found it very good.

I've recently been using Whatsapp, only for text messaging but can see the potential there. Really handy if you send overseas SMS a lot.
