I am looking at exploring affiliate marketing and offering affiliates x per lead or x per sale - can anyone point me in the right direction of which sites to have a look at ?

Also any tips that will help me move forward with this.....

Thank you in advance

It's a very broad subject as you may already be finding out! You might wish to decide whether you want to promote something that gives you commission for a "one-off" sale, Dependant on what that product is the purchase price can run from a few £ to thousands. Many schemes will require you to build specific websites with what is known as "funnel" pages, you drive the traffic and hopefully reap the rewards.

The other (and long term) more lucrative type of affiliate marketing is to find a product that has recurring fees AND pays a percentage of the fees to you every time the purchaser pays the next instalment. If you are in the UK and promote a product from a vendor outside the UK, check that you can get commissions paid by direct transfer (say PayPal) because if you get paid by cheque from the US for example, the banks fees will eat away at your profits!

I hope that this will help you in deciding if affiliate marketing is for you, Good Luck

Try looking at some affiliate networks. The ones we have worked with in the past are:

Affiliate Future
Affiliate Window
Webgains

You can then think about employing an affiliate account manager, to do the laboursome work of keeping on top of your affiliates and ensuring that everything is working as it should.

Another shout for Awin, they're smashing it at the moment so they would be my first choice. You would be best off contacting them directly, they'll help you get started.

Hi there.

The affiliate networks listed are good - obviously you can also contact sites in your niche and run an in-house affiliate program. Additionally you may find individuals who will work on a cost per lead basis - which is something that I have looked at / worked on before.. Ultimately it has to be a rewarding enough commission for someone to promote your products / services...

You need to write what kind of product or service you want to promote and how. Depending on this, you select the appropriate program. There is no ideal, universal - every network is profiled for specific industry or billing system.

Why not use an affiliate software on your website and write the affiliate signup page as a job application. Then post the job on all job-sites you can find. That should get you affiliates that want to work for a fixed sum or percentage on per lead or per sale or maybe a combination of both.

If you run Wordpress CMS you could use like AffiliateWP plugin or if you have another CMS there will surely be another software to use. And with your own software, you're in charge the whole way.

Does anyone know an affiliate network for startups? A lot of the major networks have massive setup fees. Or do I just setup my own functionality via my website?

I really don't like the term 'affiliate marketing'. I feel that almost everything in digital marketing nowadays have some sort of 'affiliate marketing' in it. Don't think the term is really relevant anymore.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion. Most of the marketing I come into contact with has zero affiliate anything.

My former boss has created several websites to publish anything about web hosting. He also became an affiliate of many famous web hosting providers. Until now, he has earned millions of dollars by helping these companies promote their services. If you are good at writing, knowing SEO and web hosting, I think you can do this work.

Two ways to implement an affiliate marketing strategy are either join an affiliate network or build your own tracking system. Research your demand for the product and select a product which has sufficient demand. Another thing you should do before starting your affiliate marketing plan is to set your default commission rates.
