Advice about IT business

Hello!

I'm in a unique situation; I am disabled and have restricted mobility. My brain works well, and I have a drive to succeed and better my situation, the main problem is that my body fails to comply.

I'm hoping for career advice about which area(s) of computing would be suitable for someone that needs to work remotely. I need a lot of care, so working from my home is the only situation that will work. As my condition is difficult, I can go days without being able to get out of bed, so I feel freelancing would be the easiest option for me. I'm moving through codeacademy, and enjoying the experience. I do feel that development is one area that would be good for me, but I'm not sure that would work. I'm not a young man (31) but I do intend to keep fighting.

Any advice or suggestions about my situation would be helpful.

If 31's not young, I feel old at nearly 39 It's good that you have the drive to achieve things though.

You'd find it hard to freelance directly with clients as they would want to see you at various points but there's no reason why you can't provide freelance services to design companies who don't need you to be client facing if you can develop sufficient skills.

Software development can definitely be done remotely. Not all projects or companies encourage this, but this is certainly possible and freelancing also works pretty well, in my experience.

When working remotely, there are lots of tools and platforms to communicate, manage projects, share milestones with clients, deploy & host applcations, find clients.

Yes, I too feel that Website design and development is a good thing to do as you do not need to be anywhere and noone will bother from where you are working. I have many healthy friends and still staying at home and working like a freelancer. I think you should start with photoshop, html for designing part and and php for coding part. I wish you luck and am sure that you will succeed with little more effort. You can create your profile at various freelancing websites like, elance, freelance, odesk, outsource etc to get works from home. Even some companies allow you to work from home if you have good knowledge.

It seems that development would be a good path. I can meet deadlines.

It has been suggested to try oDesk and PPH. Is it achievable to make a living from these sites, or use them as a springboard?

Realistically you are going to struggle as a freelancer because as was stated above you will need to be able to visit clients from time to time. People per hour and Odesk are very competitive market places with a lot of competition from India, Pakistan and other similar countries.

My advice would be to carry on learning development and come up with your own product with the end result being that you're your own boss.

I agree with FSlvan. Learn web development, web designing, and maybe SEO as well. Then run your own site providing services people would be interested in. Not all companies require physical presence. Atleast I haven't seen my office yet, but I'm a representative of that company for almost a year. I really wish luck for you, take care!
