Adding image alt tags to wordpress

Hi guys, I've already uploaded images to my WP site without adding alt text and I wondered if I go into the media library and update the alt text there will it affect the images already being used or do I have to re-upload them from scratch?

I would reload the images, only because you should also be naming your images with descriptive keyword text before you upload and add alt text.

Nah, I wouldn't bother - just edit the images and let Google do it's thing.

It is important to include alt tags to the images that has been uploaded in the wordpress site because search engines cannot understand only images but with alt tags the images will be named and consider in the search results.

This is definitely the right approach! It might not affect your site's overall rankings and user experience too much but still I always use descriptive filenames. So, unless your pictures already have such filenames, I strongly recommend re-uploading them.

You can go back to the media library, find those images you need to add alt tags and in the panel of each image there are the title, description and alt tags so you can add it from there.

I agree with fisicx, it is easy to edit image alt tag by going to media library and update all images alt tags.

The Ideal Approach:

1. The ideal approach is to add manually alt tag to each image while you upload it.
   
2. The WordPress uploaded could be a easier way to add alt tag as it has caption.
   
3. Through Media Library alt tag could also be inserted

There's no need to reupload the images again, just go to media library and update the alt attributes
