Thats kind of the point, they can throw the book at you for doing this if they feel the need to because it is still against the law.

If the police can prove that you are the slightest bit over the speed limit they can book you. The 10% is simply a tolerance and not a defence.

At the end of the day if you are travelling at 77mph but your speedo still says 70mph, you can still be nicked for speeding. However, if you can prove in court that your speedo was displaying the wrong speed, the courts may see it as unintentional and let you off.

It's also entirely possible that the current "tolerance" of people driving at speeds up to 85 mph on motorways which a lot of police forces adhere to will NOT increase when the speed limit goes up to 80 mph.

Well I thought you could do 10% over the speed limit + 1mph before being pulled over or have a camera flash.

10% of 80 = 8 + 1 = 9 + 80 = 89

So, legally, you cannot be told off for driving at 89 in an 80 speed limit, almost a whole 10mph more, on an 80 speed limit.

Besides, most speedos don't actually register the real speed of the vehicle either, so you could probably get your vehicle to register 95 and not get done for it.

But don't sue me and don't try it on a motorway, or the B road home, there is a risk I am wrong.

I always drive through 30MPH speed cameras at 34ish. Rebel I know, but 30 is slower than walking pace.

the point is I find it very hard to believe that plenty of drivers have been ticketed for actually doing 73 on a motorway, unless of course they were driving like idiots.

Listen, when you know that there is zero tolerance from the police - you travel at the correct speed limit all the time - even when not in your own county! I rarely these days go above 70 on the motorway - don't see the point of it! So my car can go a lot faster - doesnt mean I have to push it to its limits just to 'see'!

I don't think I'm the best driver on the road, I'm certainly not the worst. However, I am able to keep an eye on my speed and drive safely.

I'm not saying I'm a saint and I've never gone above the speed limit, but I certainly can keep my speed constant at or below the limit.

When I'm in a 30mph zone, no I don't realise I'm doing 35 because my engine has got louder, when I'm doing 0mph, I need to work out if I've gone deaf or I've stopped

which is exactly my point, I may know generally, aprox, roughly what speed I'm doing but I don't know exactly or if I've momentarily crept over the speed limit unless i have my eyes constantly looking at the speedo - it's part of the reason we have road signs, cameras etc because the powers that be know we're not the best, skilful and safest drivers we may think we are

I definitely need to avoid you then, would like to get to celebrate next years birthday!!
