70 mph ON THE MOTOWAY

I find that rather hard to believe! unless of course they were driving like an idiot

Thats kind of the point, they can throw the book at you for doing this if they feel the need to because it is still against the law.

If the police can prove that you are the slightest bit over the speed limit they can book you. The 10% is simply a tolerance and not a defence.

At the end of the day if you are travelling at 77mph but your speedo still says 70mph, you can still be nicked for speeding. However, if you can prove in court that your speedo was displaying the wrong speed, the courts may see it as unintentional and let you off.

It's also entirely possible that the current "tolerance" of people driving at speeds up to 85 mph on motorways which a lot of police forces adhere to will NOT increase when the speed limit goes up to 80 mph.

Well I thought you could do 10% over the speed limit + 1mph before being pulled over or have a camera flash.

10% of 80 = 8 + 1 = 9 + 80 = 89

So, legally, you cannot be told off for driving at 89 in an 80 speed limit, almost a whole 10mph more, on an 80 speed limit.

Besides, most speedos don't actually register the real speed of the vehicle either, so you could probably get your vehicle to register 95 and not get done for it.

But don't sue me and don't try it on a motorway, or the B road home, there is a risk I am wrong.

I always drive through 30MPH speed cameras at 34ish. Rebel I know, but 30 is slower than walking pace.

Make sure you don't speed in Lancashire then!!

Our police have ZERO tolerance and are well known for it in the county! I was done for doing 34 in a 30 and the same night a mate of mine was done for doing 33!

No, that's not the point.

anyone can say: but I was only doing 73 honestly guv.

the point is I find it very hard to believe that plenty of drivers have been ticketed for actually doing 73 on a motorway, unless of course they were driving like idiots.

If it were the case they'd be a lot more less fat people about

Perhaps "plenty" is an exaggeration - but it can happen.

The point was to show that people are prosecuted within the guideline tolerances as shown by Gillie:

A quick search of Pepipoo forums shows a few more cases of people prosecuted within the 10%+ +2 guidelines

33!! If that is really the case, then I find that even more dangerous and highly irresponsible of the Police to expect car drivers to have there eyes balls locked onto the speedometer - in making sure they're not over 30mph limit

Of course its the case - want me to scan in the original letter?? Listen, when you know that there is zero tolerance from the police - you travel at the correct speed limit all the time - even when not in your own county! I rarely these days go above 70 on the motorway - don't see the point of it! So my car can go a lot faster - doesnt mean I have to push it to its limits just to 'see'!

I'd expect you are able to drive and keep an eye on your speed really

O course not - you've nothing to prove.

I'm not really sure what your going on about in the last sentence

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to keep at under 30mph all the time

How long you been driving??

You have no idea how fast you are driving??

Its exceptionally easy ... know your car, know what it sounds like, and looking at the speedo takes parts of seconds ... otherwise most of us here in this county would have lost their license years ago and everyone would be dead!!

(Please tell me your car reg, so I can avoid you!!)

" under 30mph ALL the time"

so your saying you never creep over 30. If you're trying to keep under the 30mph all the time - then you're a danger to other motorists and pedestrians and what the heck has the sound of a car go to do with anything

Most cars have cruise control these days.

I think this half the problem - we all think we're the bestest and safest drivers in the world and it's always the other drivers that doesn't know what they're doing

I don't think I'm the best driver on the road, I'm certainly not the worst. However, I am able to keep an eye on my speed and drive safely.

I'm not saying I'm a saint and I've never gone above the speed limit, but I certainly can keep my speed constant at or below the limit.

You can not keep your speed constant!! whilst driving safely - you could keep it under 30 by driving really slowly - but what does that prove

As in, I can keep my speed constantly at or below the limit (and I doubt I'm the only one)

Safely? if you can, then I think your paying far too much attention on your speed than what's going on around you

Only 30 in a 30 zone, 40 in a 40 zone and so forth!!

You really don't understand about the sound of your car - ie the noise the engine makes dependent on your speed?

You have no idea generally then I take it what approx speed you are doing at any time - I definitely need to avoid you then, would like to get to celebrate next years birthday!!

Considering 2000 people die each year in road accidents what makes these 7 deaths so significant other than the media coverage. :(

I was saying it is difficult to maintain a constant speed of 30 and under in 30mph zone All the time, 40 and under in a 40mph All the time and so forth...

You really don't understand about the sound of your car - ie the noise the engine makes dependent on your speed?

When I'm in a 30mph zone, no I don't realise I'm doing 35 because my engine has got louder, when I'm doing 0mph, I need to work out if I've gone deaf or I've stopped

You have no idea generally then I take it what approx speed you are doing at any time

which is exactly my point, I may know generally, aprox, roughly what speed I'm doing but I don't know exactly or if I've momentarily crept over the speed limit unless i have my eyes constantly looking at the speedo - it's part of the reason we have road signs, cameras etc because the powers that be know we're not the best, skilful and safest drivers we may think we are

I definitely need to avoid you then, would like to get to celebrate next years birthday!!
It'd be the end of me if I was the cause of anybody's death:(
