It doesn't mean we are favourites to come second, it means we are second favourites to come first.

Firstly, those prices are shocking, anyone thinking of betting should shop around.

On oddschecker.com, best bookies prices right now are:

Brazil 11/4
Germany 8
England 8

I think Brasil look a little long at 11/4 and France could easily make a mockery of their price (or go out in the 2nd round).

I know that Germany are at home, but they'd be the worst team to win the WC in my lifetime (and I'll be 38 the day the WC starts, so that's a lot of World Cups!).

Apart from that, the prices look about right to me.

I'm still going with Holland to beat Brazil in the final. While I think England will squeak through to the second round, I don't believe we'll beat Paraguay.

Basic explanation: when they first start quoting prices in a market like this, they usually work out the chance each team has and then factor in a local bias.

So, in the UK, they know that England will be oversupported and, as they don't want too much liability on England, they contract the price a little.

Then as the market opens and develops before the competition starts, they adjust the prices according to the weight of money (and footballing news such as injuries).

So, a one qword answer to your question is: "both".

PS This is a simplified explanation. The bookies actually quote prices for the WC before the qualifiers start, so they keep having to adjust the prices to factor in how well or badly different teams are doing in th qualifiers.
