Huge Red Vodafone Ad?!?!

Agree with Officebird, there is nowt wrong with ads on the site, just not when they get in the way of posts. There's one site I used to frequent (and Simon-M, it has nothing to do with phones in a jar!) that had an ad every few posts. Drove me insane.......

So, if you get one tied to a mobile phone company, then you cannot use someone else's SIM? Say, you are in a coffee bar and they want to use your laptop to get somewhere and they only have their phone SIM. Or you forget your phone and you have the laptop and modem.

But, not all SIMs are the same from my understanding, and the Huawei uses HSDPA which is a 3G network. The new offerings from my understanding are using something different, GPRS?

As you know, advertising is essential if we are to keep the site free for the majority of members. However, because this campaign is unusual and outside the standard ad positions, we probably should have run this idea by the mods before launch.

We are not trying to turn you into publicity fodder for us or Vodafone - we thought - and still think - this is an entertaining way to offer you a good prize. None of your details are passed to Vodafone. Once we pick a winner, we will contact them to make sure they are happy for their details to be passed to Vodafone. If they are not, we will pick again. If you accept the prize the only commitment is to allow UKBF to announce you as the winner.

Hopefully people will treat the thanks button in exactly the same way as they did before - by using it to nominate the original post as a piece of excellent content.

We are committed to preserving UKBF as a place that you can come to discuss things which are important to you. I do not think the Vodafone promotion affects this aim

The strange thing about ads on the right hand side, for those of us who can still see them, is that they are only at the top. Once you have scrolled past the first post the righthand side is blank. Wasted advertising space imo.

SIFT if you'd like to ad an attractive Officebird to the blank space just to save it looking boring please feel free! Gratis of course, I won't charge you to use the image

Entering people into a competition without their consent, and stating that they have to comply with the terms of the competition (ie publicity etc) is surely illegal?

Even if not strictly illegal, its not exactly good practice, and reflects badly on both sift and vodaphone that they would act in this manner.

Its not lilke its even a decent prize, Im sure vodaphone could come up with something better than what they offer, which is at present just a means to get the winner paying them a monthly fee if they use it!

[edit] just noticed the official reply from sift - are the the terms going to be updated, not that its possible to hold someone to terms that they have no way to disagree with.

When Sift go to Vodafone and say "Hey look on Friday the 20th alone, this competition recieved 1 billion 'entries'" I think Voda will be quite chuffed. Maybe Sift know of our juvenile tendencies to take the piss on a Friday and that is why the comp started today

I have the Huawei on Vodafone and it's a great bit of kit.

Yes the SIM is removable - your contract is with the SIM not the device.

On the note I a bit sceptical about it being offered as a 'prize' as like most mobile devices it is available 'free' if you take up the right contract.

Having said that this one seems to be offering 1GB a month for free which will more than suffice for most peoples mobile use.

You will be surprised how far that 1GB will go.

I use my laptop every day for email, web browsing, and checking on my server etc. I have never come close to using a 1GB in a month.

One thing you have to be careful of though is be sure to turn off your Windows automatic updates. I once new someone who got a VERY hefty bill after leaving his laptop connected over night (he was on a PAYG contract that charged by the MB!)

I think it mostly depends on the network coverage within the area you trying to use it.

It's great around here and the M25 area.
