Will digital ID cards tackle illegal working?

When the ID card is a piece of plastic containing basic personal data, the only issue is privacy, which was lost a long time ago anyway.

But the ID card isn't just a proof of identity, it also allows access to services and is used as a reference for government databases, which run across a single personal number.

@Newchodge An app is a lot worse for privacy than a plastic card. An app can do a lot more tracking, time in which a lot more information.

It doesn't act as an id though. It can't be used to prove your right to rent or work, or to travel, say, to Ireland.

@fisicx its not the same. Its only used by the government, you do not have to show it to anyone else, you do not carry it with you.

Its also very easy to end up with multiple logins depending how you sign up for different things. I have different logins for HMRC, DVLA and child maintenance.

They will make no difference to illegal working at all.

It is a very typical government type response to a situation where people are ignoring existing laws, and existing laws are not robustly enforced. Make another law, and don't enforce that, either.

But it could be adapted and upgraded. Why reinvent the wheel when a system of identification already exists.

The ONE login was designed so you could prove your identity. And there is already an app. Just needs a bit of joined up thinking.

That's a good thing.

If everything moves to one login (which is the way it's going) then the scammers will trick people into revealing their login and have access to EVERYTHING.

Sort of true. The app uses biometric data so it’s not really going to help the scammers.

And it's going to do anything to stop the boats or a black market workforce (its just step two) of course until you suddenly find the government have bought in a digital currency, which just like now and the narrative they are using ........ "oh this is to stop the illegals working in the black market economy", really, no it will be to control us all.

The Government Acts have already been put in place the Government can suck up your data from any company they want. We have been putting our "faith" in a whole spectrum of platforms from social, shopping to Government sites etc.

In my humble view we are about 90% there and with the introduction of a national ID card this will push it to the 100% and the eventual total Government oversight / control. I think be careful what you wish for.

If you have someone's unlocked phone, e-mail and password then you can sign in through a browser, no biometrics Once you are in you have access to EVERYTHING they have ever used One login for, plus EVERYTHING else as they add more services.

I just tried it. I've been forced to use it for a couple of things and both are accessible form a single login. This causes me considerable disquiet.

At the moment, if some has my phone, they'll need to know multiple e-mail addresses (not stored on the phone) and passwords (again, never stored on the phone) to access more than one service.

Identity theft is that much harder when things are siloed and the miscreant need to phish for multiple pieces of information.

How long before scammers start phishing for One Login credential, if they aren't already?

A bit like Capita (someone the government also use) one of my pension companies got hacked and lost all my pension data including all my HMRC held details, caused me a real headache, do I trust the government to keep me safe, well that's a big fat NO

I still several years on have to keep looking over my shoulder and being alert to any suspicious online activity.
