Hi all,

I used to use the online freelancer sites a lot over 10 years ago such as UpWork (from back when it was oDesk) and others like People Per Hour.

Since then I switched to employing full time staff in the UK office which has worked out very well - much better than remote workers mostly.

But I'm now looking at finding a Virtual Assistant, and wondering people's thoughts on the freelancer sites vs. a specific virtual assistant company vs. hiring an actual PA in the UK.

So what are your thoughts?

If I was in the market for a VA then I would personally find one through local networking groups or networking in general, I just wouldn't feel comfortable with some 'unknown person' somewhere else who I have not looked in the eyes and met face-to-face assisting me in the management of myself and my business.

I was speaking to one last thursday, her and an ex colleague set up together after long careers as PA's. Between them they can cover most eventualities and seem to be really competent. The fact she said "we don't do the 'answer the phone and take messages stuff' because it is just not the best use of our time" came across that they weren't just glorified receptionist like many are.

This is exactly the sentiment behind my answer. If I had a VA I would be expecting them to help me collate information for legal teams, working with events, handle all sorts of enquiries and in many cases handling and respond in my name because they will know my opinions on things so no need to bother me with everything.
If I wanted someone to answer a phone and take a message there are a million and one providers who can do that, but I also have voicemail.

This is one area where local business networking can be your friend.

Alternatively there are loads on LinkedIn

Good communication is key here (needn't be face to face).

As with any service, avoid the big claims and promises, pay attention to the ones who ask questions and manage your expectations

Hi Paul,

As I've partnered with a virtual assistance company for assistant work when needed, and have used freelancers in the past (and currently) for virtual admin, I think I may be the right person to answer your question. You can find some really great freelancers and it's cheaper usually than going for a company, but it took me ages to find the right freelancers I needed for assistant work. So if you're looking for a sure thing sooner, I'd say opting for a company would be better!

It's an old thread but I hadn't seen it before so shall add my thoughts.

Anyone in the market for a VA should consider Virtalent. They have a bank of hundreds of highly vetted VAs (only 3% of VAs who apply to them get selected).

They'll discuss your needs with you and match you to one who is right for you. Further, they have the flexibility to provide fewer or more hours as your needs change. I highly recommend them.
