HI all ,
I have spent 1 year building a clothing brand for a niche audience
this audience typically likes indie rock , adidas trainers , unique / independent design's , boxing , football , lad banter and is fairly anti- authority
I started off with a POD model although because of COVID and the delays in production / shipping decided to switch to holding the stock myself i produced 45 tees to trail over the summer around 5 designs created custom swing tags & zip lock bags, built the online store
A bloke with a shop who caters to supplying independent brands to a similar sort of audience to me contacted me and asked if he could stock some designs in his shop
I sent him 15 tees to trail he sold 5 in around 2 months …..he said it was because of the quality i wasn't so sure , to me it looked like he had too many brands in his shop and not enough customers with a lot of products constantly being reduced to clear .....
but ok whatever he sent them back that was the end of that , the margins on retail are too small for a small clothing brand anyway and actually getting him to pay up for the ones he sold was also a ball ache with him constantly complaining about his "cashflow"
eBay has been my best channel with around 20 tees being sold on there and general feedback has been good but again fees VERY expensive
I've sold 2 tees organically through twitter with a small amount of effort again feedback was good, have around 350 followers on there , 250 on Instagram and around 500 on Facebook engagement from Facebook audience is really poor not even sure they can see anything i am posting
I am not convinced social media is the best way to market a clothing brand anymore or really any product to be honest , saturation and noise in all areas seems outrageous ?
Organic growth seems nigh on impossible unless you really have something that stands out from the crowd even then you need to boost the post and pay daily for Instagram ad's , constant organic content production is a headache
For this audience i want / need user generated content i need them in my gear whilst they are out doing their thing ,that is what they are all about but how on earth do you generate this when starting out at the bottom ?
Short of just giving the gear away ? i mean tees are relatively low cost production but now as we are moving into the winter months I've done some designs for hoods and sweats but there's no way i can afford to stock 50 hoodies and 50 sweatshirts or give them away so its back to POD for them
Basically i feel like i have hit a brick wall with marketing , i do have money to market these products but i don't want to waste it in the ether of paid social media advertising
Anyone got any smart ideas to get this brand ( physically) out to the audience
Thanks
