What are other users thoughts about these two subject and how they are related? Do you think engaging and frequent social media campaigns help with SEO or make little to no difference?

What YOU do no social media has no SEO benefits. What others do on your behalf can have SEO benefits. In other words it's the interaction with your SM activities that google picks up not the stuff you post. So one tweet that is retweeted and then shared on other platforms over a period of days is better than 1000 tweets that everyone ignores.

Although they are 2 different disciplines, both SEO and social media are very much an integral part of the digital marketing mix and will ultimately improve the chances of your content being found. From experience social media and in particular LinkedIn (when done properly) can have an impact on rankings for your keywords. However, I would add that in the main regular social media campaigns serve to create and nurture better customer relationships, help with brand loyalty and have been known to improve conversion ratios too.

So how do you do it properly?

Hi Fisicx - Great name! Knew there would be 'one' to pick up on those 3 words:)! Truth be told, I've been in Digital Marketing for the past 17 years and have been witness to many a bad campaign being run and before you jump in and say that social media wasn't around back then (LinkedIn 2002, Facebook 2004, Twitter 2006).

Ok.....

But that didn't really answer the question. How do you use linkedin to boost ranking? I agree that you can get linkedin posts and articles to rank well and you can link from the article to your website which can bring in traffic but I'm intrigued to see how you can use linkedin to boost the ranking of your money site.

Sorry but without going into actual specifics, the quality of your posts together with the quality of your niche followers/groups can generate high quality inlinks (which helps with your SEO) plus you have the added bonus of highly engaged referral traffic.

For me personally, the more important statistic is the referral traffic as we get far more quality traffic & better conversion ratios from LinkedIn than we do from all the other social media platforms combined.

Those high quality inbound links aren't coming from Linkedin though (as they are all no-follow). It's not specifically Social Media sites that help with SEO, they just happen to be one of many platforms you can use to aggregate content. You could just have easily posted articles on a popular and respected blog or news site and got the same (or better) results.

I do agree though that the right SM sites used properly can be great lead generators. Tweeting 'OMG look at this thing I'm selling' 20 times a day isn't using SM properly.

True, that the links are not coming from LinkedIn directly however, depending on how well you target your audience, the ability to talk directly to top level decision makers and subtly influence them is in my experience totally unparalleled elsewhere.

We seem to be going around in some sort of a loop here but the fact that through LinkedIn other niche targeted companies link to and then refer your post onto their contacts, who in turn link to your post helps with SEO.

As an aside, no follow links are just as important as do follow links because it shows a natural organic pattern of link building which is important to Google.

I think we are too.

My point is that it's not just SM that can get you those links, leads and contacts. There are millions of sources if you take time to look, SM sites are just the latest fad. I remember using newsgroups for much the same purpose about 20 years ago.

I know, I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about.

The trick is finding the right stuff. A facbook post about some socks you are selling isn't going work. A post about how your kitten got stuck in one of your socks might do the trick. What happens after that is all your followers share the kitten post and you get some traffic and google picks up the links. Like I said, it's not what YOU post, it's how others then use that content that google (and others) notice.

I remember some filly on UKBF saying how she brought a blouse from some online store so SM does work. When questioned it turned out is was somebody pinning the blouse on pinterest, it wasn't a promo from the online store.

Any tradesman will tell you a referral is the best lead you can get. SM is no different, post stuff people want to read/share and they will do your marketing for you.
