Which hosting provider in the UK do you recommend as the best and why? The company where I work is about to launch a few new floor sanding websites. The websites will target the UK market. I have to find the one provider that has the fastest and the most secure servers. Any suggestions?

Hi Emma,

It very much depends what you are after? Do you have any particular requirements? How many visitors per day do you expect? Do you have an idea on the amount of diskspace you need?

Regards,

Jacob

Don't automatically choose the biggest names as very often the support is lacking.

Have a look at online review centers like Trustpilot, Reviewcentre etc

Hi Jacob,

We expect about 1000 visitors per day after a few months after the launching of the websites. I don't know the amount of diskspace needed.

I would suggest you consider two companies

UKFAST superb 3 ring's to get a engineer on support, Fast servers and High Quality at lower price than rackspace

Rackspace High Quality and High Prices

Hi Emma,

As others have mentioned, the best host depends on the individual requirements. If you're happy supporting the technical aspect of the hosting yourself, it would be a different answer to needing a fully managed service.

What application are the sites based on? Wordpress/Woocommerce, Opencart, Magento, etc. If support is a factor in your hosting requirement, you need to consider who can provide the best for your app.

Security - hosting access and/or physical security of the hosting location? I've been in data centres with retina scans and I've been weighed in & out of another. A lot of server security is down to yourselves, creating a user Admin with password Pa55w0rd leaves it wide open, wherever it's located.

Not very helpful answers but things to consider in the decision for your business.

If you want speed then you are going to need to go dedicated or at least VPS, any shared hosting won't be fast enough. There are several vendors that now do VPS with solid state drives. You can get one of these for $10-$20 a month. For beginners a good one is cloudways as it puts a nice front end over digital ocean VPS. I use RamNode which is faster but does require you to be know your linux admin really well to get anywhere.

You need to assess what you want for your budget and how simple you want to keep things. Sure Rackspace and UKFast are good but very expensive for the average website owner looking for a web presence for their site and you need a certain level of knowledge. Rackspace in particular have a tendency to talk to you as if you're an IT expert! This can be off-putting for novices.

However, as others have said it depends on the type of site you're hosting and what factors are most important for you. Oftentimes, I am afraid you won't really know what the host is really like until you're signed up and experiencing it first hand!

I have been told by many people that we are the best host they have ever been with, having said that it could be that they have just never been with anyone else? I tend to believe them though. :)

As others have said, Horses for courses.....

You really need to find out the hosting requirements. Do you need Windows hosting (which covers pretty much everything - asp.net, MSSQL, PHP & MySQL) or Linux hosting (PHP, MySQL etc), how much disk space as a minimum.

The above is not true. Yes some shared hosting is slow because hosts cram thousands of sites onto one server, but not all shared hosting is the same! A dedicated server will cost you, at least, hundreds a month and an under resourced VPS can be slower than bad shared hosting.
My advice would be to find a good UK shared host in the beginning, that will let your site grow, and until you establish how popular the website becomes.

As others have said, without more infomation it's impossible to say without knowing the details of the site.

1000 visitors per day on a small site could easily be manged on a shared server. 1000 visitors per day on a site with a complex database and loads of scripts and feeds many need a VPS or even a dedicated server. 1000 visitors per day all downloading massive files may need a dedicated server.

What is the site and why do your think you will be getting 1000 visitors per day?

Best webhosting company can vary from customer to customer , it really depends on what is the customers requirement and how easily a web hosting company is able to offer the service required in long term relation is what matter, initially you might find every company offering good sales and support.. but is this the same case after couple of years, that's what you need to look for. So do some research you can take help of WHT Forum to make you decision.

I was with clustered.Net for years. Very reliable but only communication was abrupt support tickets. Had to move to TSO Host when I couldn't get cs cart to run and so far am very happy with the service, especially support on phone at all times! I do pay a little more though for managed VPS

Our customers won't be downloading massive files because the website will be extremely simplified. we expect about 1000 visitors per day because the SEO experts, who have been working with us for more than four years now, have made a comprehensive research based on multiple new websites they have optimized over the years. Of course, I realize these numbers are not certain and nobody can tell the exact amount of visitors.

In which case just about any hosting company will suffice. 1000 per day on a wordpress is a tiny loading so if just choose a host you feel comfortable with.

I use openmind hosting. Out of all the hosts I've used over the years they have proved to be the most reliable and easy to work with.

Hi Emma,

Yes a VPS or Dedicated Server wouldn't be required for this, and normally I'd recommend shared hosting to begin with as any decent web host will be able to scale up as your websites grow.

Given that you're looking to run Wordpress for business you may want to look at eCommerce hosting packages, especially if you'd like to make use of SSL certificates to secure the websites and want fast performance.

This varies by provider but in our case our eCommerce offering is higher performance than our standard web hosting, whilst being more affordable and simpler than opting for a VPS.

As you're looking to run Wordpress then Linux hosting would be the obvious choice, and if performance is important then you may want to look for a host that provides a faster web server than standard Apache, such as LiteSpeed or Nginx.

As the business is targeting UK customers then you'll also benefit from choosing a UK based web host with UK based servers, as your visitors will likely get better performance which can improve their experience and also benefit your search engine ranking.

If you have any questions then we're happy to help, we've been hosting a number of UKBF members for years.

I hope that helps.

All the best,

Dan

Your requirements can easily be fulfilled by most hosts out there. But whoever you choose, make sure to check the location of the servers that your site would be hosted on. AND if they offer support services when you most need them. If you aren't well verse with troubleshooting the issues, this is something which would be vital in the long run.

For private things awhile back I used bhost they are fairly cheap, their only problem recevetly is they have been gettin glots of dos attacks and the servers have sometimes been unavailable but I hear they are currentely upgrading them. If you want low budget this is worth a look. For the rest I use my own hosted servers ;)
