What was your first Job?

Part time job in the local petrol station - in the days when we actually served customers at the pump.

Got my first training in upselling - if somebody came in for 4 gallons of regular (2 star, before stars were invented) we were told to ask if they wanted to round it up to £1!

Not just putting petrol in - ended up fitting batteries, tyres and balancing wheels.

Also, having looked at the figures, the cost in 1963was allegedly 57d. That would make 4 gallons 228d, or 19/-. that looks like less than a pound to me.

Work experience - I did work for a Fire equipment firm , checking extinguishers and fire alarm systems. Was great fun and learned a lot ( Shame it was only a week ) , I did apply after school but was turned down.

In between school and work - I did general laboring for my father ( builder )

First "real job" - Cassette factory packer. Used to pack 1000's of the old cassette tapes into their boxes ready to be shipped to HMV etc.

Second "real job" while at college - Bar staff.

Third real job - Network operator for an ISP. ( Im a computer geek )

Fourth and So on - Network / Infrastructure engineer for one of the biggest service providers in the world and owner of IMupporting live chat software

That can't be right. I remember my mother complaining when the price of petrol hit 3/9d. Which would give 4 gallons for 15 shillings, or 75p for the more modern reader. This must have been in the 60's, or possibly the early 70's.

Quite I remember paying 20 to 25 pence a gallon in 1960.

I did a week's work experience in the library of Filton College in Bristol.

The first paid work I can clearly remember was folding towels in a hospital laundry for a fortnight. It wasn't too bad, but we had the radio on all day. Endless repeats of Mysterious Girl by Peter Andre and Wannabe by the Spice Girls.

Oh the joys of temping!
