Hi,

I have been given the oppertunity to set up my own business selling a product on the internet, but the problem is I haven't got a clue where to start because this is my first business. What would be the first step?

Please help if you can, I'm only 20....

Thanks in advance

Go to freewebstore.org

Open a free account

Build a free website

Set up paypal

Sell your product for free

Don’t expect it to generate many sales, you’ll need investment, time & knowledge for that. But that’s where to start

What is your product?

Thank you...

So when i've done that, how do i then get the traffic to that website?

My product is in outside security, I would say what it is but I've been told to never tell anyone what you sell :|

Never tell anyone what you sell?!?!?!? Then how do you plan to sell it!

You can upgrade your account to get google analytics which will explain your traffic to you.

Then you need to advertise, word of mouth (if you decide you would like to tell people what you sell……..)

Google adwords (you can get a £50 free voucher if you search for it)

Flyers, leaflets, trade shows, exhibitions, car boots, walking down the street with a sandwich board attached to you with you web address on it.

Google shopping feeds

Ebay

Amazon

Play

Write your web address in the sand

Write it on your car

Jet wash it into your street

Tattoo it on your face

Mention it on facebook and twitter every 6 minutes

Write a song about it

Ask a large breasted lady to wear a t-shirt advertising it (stolen this idea from a previous post)

Run on the pitch @ Goodison park with your website on a t-shirt and handcuff yourself to the goalpost.

The last sentence by definition is stupid and nearly as stupid and me taking the time to respond to this thread.

Sorry to sound slightly rude, but if you meant what you actually said, I think this may be a big red flag on if you are really cut out to start your own business.

However If I have mis-read this then apologies, the issue you are going to have is if this product is not unique or to become hugely in demand you may struggle getting it off the ground without deep pockets!

It take time and serious amounts of time! but good luck

I guess the op meant to say something like he doesn't want any competition to find out what his niche market item is incase they jump on the bandwagon. I guess that's a fair enough statement?

Exactly. There are plenty of people on here who don't say what they sell. There is a risk about being open with business facts if your business can be identified or if people know what you sell.

CooperUK why have you posted this in the International forum? Wouldn't it be better in the Ecommerce section?

There are so many factors to weigh up when choosing your ecommerce solution so I certainly wouldn't just go for the first one that is suggested. Have a search through the ecommerce section, startup has been discussed so many times. You will find loads of different ecommerce software suggestions but go and look at them all for yourself and try and work out what is best for you.

Good luck and yeah, if I was you I wouldn't tell anyone either what you plan to sell. Obviously you are going to market your business to potential customers but that's very different from telling a forum full of entrepreneurs who will happily pinch your idea if it's a good one.

Having a specific idea in starting a business is definitely right. The same rule applies to online business, getting ready with an ideas is the first step in starting online business. In fact, every howling business starts with a tiny idea. You wish to become your own boss needs to implement your ideas and that should be more creative in nature. Having a healthy competition is really around and you must take the chances from good or bad.
