To kick start a forum and get good content to kickstart a community you need to give people incentives to post, it could be money, could be free services, gifts, entry into a competition (that's worth while), or website hosting etc.

I forgot to add, getting as many people to signup and/or getting them to post also doesn't look good on the site. If you want to do that, automatically generate users into the database. People do look at member count before they signup, yes indeed... they also look for the counts of topics and replies. Also, most your forum traffic will come from search engines so you will need the content too to hold down a community.

Spot on, it is hard work, and can be a long process.
Getting people to register is one thing, but getting them to stay is another too!
I have a few members that have only posted a few times, some 0, but thats life!

Yip, it is hard work but worth it in the end, There are a lot of cleaning forums out there but seem to pretty graconian in there ways and dont offer any more than talking to each other.

I'm still learning how to run and attract new members to the forum with good content and very concious of the fact that it will take time to build.

I have already offered some invaluable info in the shape of free downloads to the window cleaning sector with more to come.

Once people get to know there are free things for all on the forum then the members & posts will coming flooding in "I HOPE"

Rome wasnt built in a day.

As in my case, you are passionate about what you do, which really helps, no rome wasn't built in a day, but the best things come to those who wait-and work hard!

Good luck with it, it sounds interesting.

OK, just a few pointers:

-- the free forum links don't do it justice
-- you cant browse forums until you logged in (that's a BIG NO!)

Let me get this right, Are you saying that I should display the free forum links but not allowed to post or download until they sign up.

The "get your free forum" links won't help matters. People would want to get their own, be the admin etc. also doesn't give your site much credibility.

Forums should be browsable by both search engines and people. For example, this one! You can browse posts without needing to be a member or logged in. I only registered because I like what I saw. Then requiring registration (or logging in) to post is a great idea (stops a lot of spam).

Thanks you have answered some unconsious questions I had especially about the search engine bit. That will explain why most of the cleaning forums posts are not listed on google etc..

I have changed the forum to browsable now take a look and your comments would be appreciated good or bad. clean2o .co.uk

When you land on UKBF what do you see?

Make yours the same - when I arrive I want to see all the topics listed in front of me. Get rid of the pointless left column. The home button leads to a different page than the one I landed on...

I think your niche is far too small, window and carpet cleaning isn't going to attract an awful lot of members (I'd of thought they were out earning a crust). Why not open it to all mobile cleaning services.

I've got horizontal scrolling here FF3 and 1024px.

There you go.

What are you talking about?

This thread was last replied to nearly 4 years ago. The site in question probably no longer exists. When you start digging up really old threads we all get them in our 'new posts' feed and its annoying.
