Hello

I was hoping to get some advice from those who sell and ship outside of the UK
I own an online jewellery business and we import our goods and elements to make our own goods and i have got to grips with the routine of importing, such as customs codes etc. At the moment we only sell and ship within the uk but i was wondering what is involved in selling and shipping outside of the uk whether it be in europe or elsewhere? Is anything outside the uk classed as exporting? i am quite unfamiliar with the processes of exporting so would appreciate your expertise

You can send anywhere in the EU without any issues at all. There are slightly different VAT rules if you and the customer are both VAT registered though.

If you send outside the EU it's an export and the customer will be liable for local import duty/tax. You will also need to complete customs declarations/commercial invoices and if you are VAT registered obtain some proof of export.

You could also check on import restrictions for certain countries but really this is the responsibility of the importer.

What did you have in mind? Is it retail?

We export to to America, Canada, Australia, Africa and Europe so it can be a mine field. Make sure that when you export to ANYWHERE you get a POD for each delivery or HMRC can ask for the VAT on that order.

Europe, if you are VAT registered you need to get the companies VAT number and check that it is live before you export to them under the EU policy.

Otherwise, you need a good shipping agent who will be as keen to deal with damage claims as they are to deal with collecting your goods, try Transglobal in Merseyside and ask for Pam (tell her Graham sent you!) they are an agent for TNT and DHL and have helped us with air fright and road freight to Europe and they are more cost effective than have a direct account!
