Hi,

Is this a farce? I have just come across this 'directory' that has a PR7:

www. products-and-services .com (I won't give it the satisfaction of a link)

On looking at what websites link to it, there are just lots and lots of websites that just say on their home page 'Server maintenance, you may visit other sites now.' followed by the above address.

Comments welcome.

So when you said "if a domain has no decent name" and
"Obviously the person didn't want it"
you were just basing that on your opinion then?

Why do people feel the need to argue about such basic things all the time, which are common knowledge anyway. So what, the guy sold or gave up a domain name, so what, who cares, I don't.

Because it is rellevant to the thread.

The OP wanted comments on how a directory like that got such a high PR
The reason why, is because the PR displayed and the backlinks shown are from the site ifat . org

The person who acquired ifat .org also owns the directory in the OP
and appears to be setting up other fake high PR sites which are probably being used to try and hide the fact that the backinks are to ifat .org

All a bit amateurish, as he isn't even blocking the cache on the sites he is faking the PR from.

Why would they fake it then, in the hope people like me try to buy links?

It's not actually faking the PR, it is more a case of trying to pass on all the PR and link juice from the other domain.

The other domain will have lots of very strong backlinks and if the webmasters linking to them don't notice the change these will remain.

The other domains (that redevo mentioned) are faked, I assume he is just doing this to try and hide the footprints of the links pointing to the other domain.

But yes, I imagine the main idea is to make the site look a lot stronger than it is. A number of reasons why; to sell links, to rank high in lists of directories that rank by PR, to attract attention, vanity, etc. etc.

Thanks for all the comments. I first noticed the directory sandwiched between respectable directories on a list ordered by page rank. This really does make a mockery of page rank doesn't it, and I can see why Google dropped it from the equation.

I don't understand why the owner of the website hasn't made more of an effort to make it live up to its page rank value? i.e. make it more appealing.

One question though...what does 'faking pagerank' mean?
