Hi, our site has had a small revamp and I'm looking for ideas on how to improve our rankings for "professional indemnity" on google. I've read that some high quality backlinks is a good place to start, but how do I go about acquiring these?

I had a look at your site and also at the competition for the term "professional indemnity", and the good news is that there are several things that you can do to get top rankings for that particular search term.

Getting backlinks is certainly one of the ways that you will want to start with however before you do this your website will need to be SEO optimised properly to take full advantage of any backlinks that you generate.

I quite like the website, very clean and professional.

I would start off with optimising your pages first, there are a couple things that need tweaking such as:

1) Use the word Professional indemnity in your title tag (preferrably first)
2) Make Professional indemnity bold within the body text (helps a little)
3) Sort out the errors (only 19)
4) Make better use of your H1 and H2 tag
5) Make better use off your Alt tags within your images
6) URL Canonicalisation (google it) - i cant do any form off links to show and example lol

Off page, get links from relevant high authority websites with the anchor text being Professional indemnity.

If you do a bit of research into the different techniques, you should pick up some tips pretty easily and quickly.

If you want more traffic then you can buy it but it won't necesarily generate any new leads

If you want highert ranking you need to do a lot of work on the site and you need to be patient as it can take months to see the results.

If you want to create more leads then again you need to do a lot of work on the site as there a good number of fundamental errors the designer has made.

I have to say that I quite like the new design and I think it sits well within your sector. It's clean, slick and professional looking.

However, as the others have said, you are a fair way away from ranking well for that search term and a lot of work needs to be done both on-page (on your website itself) and off-page (link and brand building).

Also, I would probably suggest (research needed to confirm) targeting a less-competitive term to get started with like 'professional indemnity cover' which would still be easy to write good copy for, but less competitive in terms of ranking.

You're right I didn't consider the reasons for improving our ranking. The end result I want is more leads, if we have the other two then great but with the nature of what we do they aren't essential. What kind of errors have been made?

#1. The homepage is all about you and not about the client's needs.
#2. Homkepage doesn't tell me what you can do for me
#3. The flashy slidey thing pushes all the useful stuff down the page.
#4. There is no call to action.
#5. Main navigation is a surprising drop down which makes it far too complicated.

I'd also have a word with your designer, your contact form is being sent to his website.

First off - dead nice looking site. Simple, appealing, smashing.

Second, Ed's totally bang on, no calls to action and you need to think 'sales copy', get into your customer's needs. The customer's not really bothered about you, more about what you can do for them.

Find their pain and solve it.

But blimey, you're way ahead of lots of other companies in this market. I like that font too.

I used to work on the SEO for a large insurance company and Professional Indemnity Insurance was one of our targets so I know a fair bit about this market.

Rather than targeting "professional indemnity" go for "professional indemnity insurance", it's a more targeted term and visitors are more likely to convert into sales from that term, I just know that from experience. There are also more searches for that term, I seem to recall.

You need to specifically target that term which I can't see that you have done on your site. Either target the term on your homepage or make an individual page titled "Professional Indemnity Insurance- get a quote for PI Insurance" or something like that so you make use of the long tail searches. The more descriptive your title the better. People have explained how to optimise your titles in earlier posts.

In the copy on the page throw in keywords of some of the professions you cover such as "IT professionals professional indemnity insurance" that's a nice long tail term that might get you some traffic whilst you are waiting to rank well for your main term. You can do that for a few of the professions you cover.
