Please i need someone to tell me how.i have an idea and i need some assistance. No man is an island you know.i need u....

Either pay someone lots of money to do it for you or learn to do the programming yourself.

In any case there are already a number of failing facebook clones, why do you want to add to the list?

Take a look at hotscripts.com
there you will find off-the-shelf scripts which will create such a site for you.

Search for "social network" and you will find loads of applications, some free and some have an annual premium.

If your coming on to a forum asking how to do it, unfortunately you really do not have it in you to succeed in such a mammoth task, as harsh as it sounds. Im pretty sure Mark Zuckerberg knew exactly what to do hence he is successful. You need alot of technical know how, a fat bank balance and a miracle. Facebook is a great business model but it is a brand, you could go design a pair of trainers tommorrow but they wont be nike will they?

If it was as easy as you think to create FB then you have to ask yourself why Microsoft etc invested hundreds of millions into the company when they have access to the dev teams in the world.

Facebook only make money from advertising and to do that correctly you need huge numbers of users. Why not set up a mini social network on Ning and once you reach a million users roll it out from there

A knowledge in web programming and internet marketing is a first step. If you don't have any time for this, you can hire a programmer and an SEO specialist and that would cost a lot. And if you succeed, you can write an essay on the steps that you took in achieving a high capacity website.

Also remember, that to host such a large website, you would need expertise in PHP and SQL optimisation.

You would probably need to spend tens of thousands a month on server-clusters just to manage the load too.

I hope you've won the lottery several times over, because Facebook has invested millions into it's website and you won't get anywhere near the same traffic and usability without spending more.

P.S You would need to comply with disability discrimination laws in basically every country around the world, which can add substantial cost to your development.

Once you've opened, let me know, I'd like to look.

16 people have wasted their time responding to a glaringly obvious troll post.

Guys, trolls are not a problem, so long as you ignore them. This lesson should have been learned over 10 years ago.

To all those that say such an idea needs a large budget - did facebook not start out as a student project for US college kids to network?

Sometimes a good, and crucially original idea, is enough to let rip and go worldwide.

The problem is that facebook and the like were created during the webs golden age. They were'nt exactly genius breakthroughs, they were almost common sense. Twitter pulled off the same trick when the web hit mobile devices on a large scale. It was never a secret that people like to update one another on the move - its been the way since the postcard was invented.

So I reckon the most important talent to get these things going mainstream is the ability to read a new trend before its quite able to happen.

I think the comparison website has some legs yet. I had an idea for a UK site that allowed comparison and reviews of car garages, basically a way of exposing the cowboys. This would need cash just to get the legal side sorted - I don't have that amount of cash sadly... But I fully expect to see it happen to this and other industries within the next few years.

Web companies are now built like with VC's using "faces" to launch new brands and create media buzz. If you look around you will find most of these new social media companies have had affiliation with known players since launch.

Sites like FB and you Youtube were always built for capital investment and the seed investors knew exactly how to play it.

Keep an eye on a startup like Dailybooth.com . The guy who runs it is a young brit and has some serious backing from San Fran VC's. Just watch its growth in 2010

Don't wish to be too argumentative but I'm fairly certain facebook was launched simply as a college social network. The fact that college kids were cool caused other to join and then it exploded.

I may be wrong, although I feel right so I'm avoiding a simple google search to find the facts!

Feel free to do it for me.

It probably was started as a school project.

But so was Google, and Microsoft had to spend millions to even get some visitors to go to Bing when they launched it.

So, if you're saying I could go back to school, create a website that let's you post your life online, and become a near-instant success, then thanks, I'll do that now.

Alternatively, I'll start my own search engine and have millions of people using that too.

I love your enthusiasm but you can't create a website to compete with large websites anymore, nobody pays attention to such things.

What often happens online (something the traditional businessperson needs to learn) is that amazing things are created with next to no budget or experience. These things are then invested in. Facebook is an example of this, a useful tool that someone else recognised as a business just before it exploded.

The trick is still, always in fact, to not compete but to create something that will be useful tomorrow. You are right, there is no point competing with the giants that already exist.

If you have very little/no knowledge in programming and the internet and great skills designing user interfaces, then you should not bother. Unless you have some Ks to hire professionals...

A whole generation of kids are about to hit working age with self developed skills in web dev and general programming. I believe things are about to move faster and more suprisingly than ever before.

The facsinating thing about kids, they tend to learn what they need to know for when they grow up - they are already there, more equppied for the future than any money can buy. with the right idea of course.

My posts have been based on the basis that the OP wanted to create something similar to Facebook and gain the same amount of traffic.

Count me in that category...

kids with no £££ might be programming whizzes, but will never be able to pay for a server, or the masses of infrastructure (servers, pipe, buildings, mirrors and the like) Thats the bit of the bill everyone forgets

It's easy to do web development without a web server (in the sense of the ones you pay for) as many good programmers are aware.

Thing is, if you have a site which is succesful, even at the start you need could bring in some revenue from advertising, the pennies of google ads add up, and with a site which users enjoy, they are often willing to donate.

I could be being a bit positive seeing as A) I was a Kid about a year ago, and B) If the site is up and running on a cheap server, and is gaining traffic, people will be more willing to invest, but it would need to have a very big future.

Oh and C) I am hoping to be in this category soon :p

have you guys any idea of the scale and infrastructure for the hardware for a site like facebook http://mukulblog.blogspot.com/2008/04/facebook-server-infrastructure.html
My site won't be anywhere near the size of facebook, and no matter how succesful in the industry wouldn't even scratch the surface, however what i was saying was more a case of, by the time you get to that size, somehow it would get funded. Again you don't start off needing that amount of servers, something that comes with success.

None of which is required to have, implement, and prove an idea. Facebook required none of the above when it launched, with the exception of the server, which belonged to the college.

I agree with your latter sentiment. Big sites cost money, but big sites also attract it. Making yourself rich is difficult, but if your site attracts 10k visitors a day then there are a number of ways of scraping the revenue to run the servers etc.

Whatever your motivation in deciding to build your own social networking site, you should first ask yourself and reflect on these questions:
> Do you know the niche you would like to start up with?
> Do you know others of same sector?
> Do you have enough budget?

I think the web is still new enough for bright ideas to experience meteoric growth, but they are getting fewer.

They are also well publisiced when they happen but can be short lived. Witness Million Dollar Home page and Friends Reunited.

Hence they are easy targets for us to be grumpy about. I would imagine niche social networking could be successful - for instance a 'face book' for musicians or some other large social group.

I disagree. All they want to do is copy what already exists. They are a generation who believe you can get everything for free, that everything should happen in an instant and that you can earn an income without leaving your room. Whilst there are certainly some clever programmers out there, 99% of the IT knowledge learnt by the current generation comprises cutting and pasting and setting up myspace/facebook pages.

And yet they still get rich...

I think it depends on the mindset of the person. If someone goes out and wants to make a site which will make them millions, then it doesn't always work as well. If you go out with what you think is a good idea, and are determined to get the site up and running, then in my opinion you have more chance of succeding.
The chance of making a site "similar" to Facebook etc is now unreal, there are so many of these type of sites now, that it will be a lot tougher to think of a good site. However if you are in more of a niche, you have more of a chance, and again an interest in what you intend to have on the site, then the chances of it one day making some money is much more realistic.
