steve the fitter

Just found this site today so hi to everyone.

Im a kitchen fitter living in essex. In the last year I have spend about 600 pounds on internet advertising. (trade directories)

I have a website and am wondering if going forward I should spend some money getting my own website on the first page of google etc or let people find me throught the directories??

Been reading some posts today and would be interested to hear from people offering SEO services. Would a website for a independant kitchen fitter be easy to get on the first page of google, yahoo etc . I would only really want traffic from a 20 mile radius so search would include area.

I probably cant post my website address here so wont try but if anyone would like to look at the site and tell me what they think they could do for it seo wise I'd be happy to pm it over.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,

The first thing you could do is submit your business address to Google maps, this link should help - http://www.google.com/local/add/

The idea of that is if someone searches kitchen fitters in Chelmsford (not sure what part of Essex you're in) - your business name will come up on the map at the top of the search.

I think that'll be the easiest, cheapest and quickest way to get noticed.
Then consider some SEO - but be careful who you choose with that, I have a habit of spending money on SEO only for people to take my money, do very little work, then ignore me.

Good Luck

From my POV £600 would be a good budget to help get traffic from search engines. Geographic terms like your are generally uncompetitive and I've heard some real success stories of local trades people literally generating enough enquiries to run a business from through search engines rankings. That would not necessarily be the case though.

The thing is with search engines is your investment can be long term as you don't have to keep paying anyone to come up in Google. Since your niche is not competitive, there is no reason you can get good traffic and never have to invest in your site again.

Ali has a good point with the maps. You could set up a listing on Google Maps (Google Local Business Centre) as you can get some decent traffic from that if you set it up properly.

Feel free to post for advice for setting one of those up as setting them up well requires a bit of knowledge.

Similar to the above posts, unless you have at least a couple hundred pounds a month to spend on a professional SEO company, the best way to get noticed would be to spend some time yourself getting into Google local listings and some of the major business directories like linkcentre and hotfrog.

Apart from spending money on a professional SEO company, you could put aside a small budget for Google Adwords PPC a month and make sure you come up for any relevant terms in your business and area.

find out how many people are searching for your services in your area and see if it will be worth getting to the first page of google.

Thanks for all the replies.

Ive tried doing a google maps ads and although it says activated it doesnt seem to appear when i type in kitchen fitter romford. (which is where i live) ANyone got any ideas why??

Also I have got quite a good internet presence but was wondering if people would prefer to go straight to my website rather than finding me through a directory and in turn get me more work?

Really appriciate all the replies so far and look forward to hearing what other advice you can offer.
Cheers

What is your URL? Can't give you any advice without it.

The only way you could find out it to take the plunge, but personally, I would more likely contact you if you had a good site as opposed to a thin directory listing.
