I have email from 5 different servers/ISPs.

I currently use Outlook, but am looking for a webbased solultion so that I can access all quickly from out of the office. (on a webbook & dongle)

I like the functionality of outlook, but am getting peeved by the constant crashing out. I use the search a lot, and tend to have quite a few old emails, i use the folders & rules to seperate out different email for different projects.

So, suggestions please - what would work well for me?

Many thanks
Sandra

Would a Blacberry be suitable so when your out and about? You can still check all your emails with out the need for a webbook & dongle.

Although I do think it is the worst thing I have ever bought. I can't help but check email now.. even on my days off!

Sandra,

First problem is that if you're using Outlook, you're more than likely using POP3 to download the e-mails. This means that you're moving them from the email server to your computer, and they will only be available to you locally from that machine.

Second problem: you have a lot of different servers to check - why? Could you drop some of the e-mail addresses and just have the one main account (i.e. @boxby) so that you can centralise everything?

If you did this, you would then have lots of different options (one being to use IMAP to set up a server-based e-mail storage to synchronise more than one host to the account).

Failing all of this, just update to IMAP anyway and set up Google Mail to grab your email. Jenni at FarrantFrost does this, and I think she's quite happy with how it works.

The pop3 accounts all leave a copy of the message on the server until deleted, so i've always got the option to access old emails whilst away from the office. And unfortunately i think that i do need the seperate accounts, because the fact that there are 3 different business.

I use a catch all, but there are a couple of accounts seperated off for my husbands emails/business.

Anyone use Evolution?

Why not just download thunderbird and import all settings and email from outlook?

You can set this then to just download headers and still leave messages on the server.

I do this myself and the only downside I have found is trying to locate sent items are they stay local to the machine you sent it from, apart from that it works fine and is free.

I recently migrated from POP3/Outlook to IMAP/Gmail/Thunderbird as mentioned above.

I have all my email accounts forwarding to one Gmail account and use IMAP on T-bird to read them locally.

The big advantage here is that emails which have been read/replied to etc are marked as such both on T-bird and at Gmail - basically they're automatically synchronised.

If I delete an email from T-bird it moves to 'trash' on Gmail and vice versa.

So no matter where email is accessed, it still referencing one source.

Add to that the ability to tag emails automatically as they arrive (which puts them in folders on T-bird) as well as cool Gmail plug-ins like 'GTD Inbox' the email monster is finally tamed, friendly even.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeer, no one has mentioned HOTMAIL, does it smell, as if it's stepped into something nasty? ................ it's totally universal, never let me down in years, and has a huge capacity, and if a tight business person - FREEEEEEEE ! Compared to MS Outlook, Express etc., especially when dependent on SKY servers (that we pay for!), it's there when OUTLOOK wobbles. And yes, I know about the recent OUTLOOK fix, I posted it! :p

Yes, Hotmail. Please show me how to export your emails from hotmail to gmail for instance. To compare, Gmail lets you export your emails.
Open an hotmail account and you are tied to it or lose your emails.

IMAP/Thunderbird is a great combinaison.
This will let you synchronize your emails with anything.
Office pc, home pc, mobile phone, Netbook...

I like Thunderbird very much especially with the Mozbackup tool (Google it).

OK, I know an awful lot of people who are not as I.T. gifted as you obviously are.
They find Hotmail totally suitable for their requirements and have not even sampled Outlook or gone near web mail, even though it's on their computers. So, unless something obvious is not mentioned now and again(like Hotmail), then some guys & girls on here, plus those who are not members, but pick up a comment from a Google or Yahoo link, (and please complete the list), will not get the opportunity to have their grey matter alerted to other email solutions.
I'm off to Cuba tomorrow for a couple of weeks, to sample a different culture, that as always intrigued me, and don't expect for one minute to bump into any public computers, or a Fidel Castro internet cafe. :D
A welcome break from the life - consuming internet.

Help!

Have got servers to gmail working.
but gmail imap to thunderbird not working.

Have followed gmail instructions TO THE LETTER - TWICE, and i can get as far as thunderbird requesting the gmail password, but the setting that the gmail instructions tell me to put in give me [email protected]@imap.gmail.com which seems to make everything stop.

Is this right???

Help. Now have 2500 emails, and can't seem to delete anything in Thunderbird.
Please help, please please help.

Also, i take it that in gmail you can't sort inbox into sender or subject matter???

Sounds like Thunderbird is still downloading headers for all those emails. It won't be very responsive while it's doing that. It'll be OK when it has finished, but will take some time to do multiple deletes via an internet connection.

When you delete, the mail is actually moved to the Deleted Items folder, maybe labelled Trash. You can then empty that (right click) to finally delete permanently.

As regards sorting, in Thunderbird click on the columns and it will sort, click again to sort the other way, and explore the View menu for options. You can also change the columns that are displayed if you want to.

Beware IMAP will synchronize with your gmail account. Delete in Thunderbirds means deleted in Gmail. The opposite is true too. That's what synchronizing is.
You can go in Gmail and delete your spam from there (when Thunderbird has finished downloading your headers).

I have sorted out in thunderbird now. In thunderbird it shows 2 accounts, under my gmail username, inbox - which is the one i have sorted, created folders for and filed. Gmail now shows the same as this when i log in to gmail webmail, which is reassuring.

However, thunderbird also shows gmail under my username, greyed out and in brackets, which shows what was originally downloaded, before sorting/filing/deleting - whats all this about??

They are subfolders which you usualy are not aware being subfolders when connected on your Gmail account.

In your Gmail account you got under Inbox subfolder called Starred, Chats, Sent Mail, Drafts; That's what they are.

Add-ons I would recommend you look for to install in Thunderbirds are:
Folderpane Tools: to sort your different accounts as you get more
Get All mails: to retreive all mails from different accounts with one click
MinimizeToTray: so you can control if it should close or minimize Thunderbird to the tray
British English Dictionary: to spell check your emails before sending.
You can spell check now but it will never find a mistake without a dictionary.
Lightning: Integrated calendar

Maybe missing the obvious - but doesn't your email server have webmail acccess already? Squirrel Mail or the likes?

Then all you do is type in the address of the webmail and your in.

Read message 1.
He got 5 email accounts. With Gmail he can look for his 5 email accounts from the same Gmail accounts + not everybody like the interface of webmail.
