Tea/Coffee/Milk

Have you lot just spent 48 hours discussing the tax allowance on a tea bag?
We can see the businesses on here who have been working with HS2 🤣
A cup of tea costs little, but the quiet time taken making and drinking gives you time to relax and consider things, after all think what the tea Ceremony did to Japan's high speed trains (a world wide leader). never knock the humble cup of tea

Can Google Ads Phrase Match be Trusted

Google Ads match types no longer do what they say on the tin!

This is because they're no longer built for you to run small campaigns, or the sort of tight keyword type campaign that used to be so successful.

These are all built for AI type campaigns (max conversions, VBB etc), these work pretty well if you run ecommerce, or you need really good data and form, phone, value tracking for lead gen. You will always need to be blocking irrelevant searches as negative keywords.

Unfortunately, as searches move to longer tail and AI search takes over, there will be less search traffic available for the more traditional methods.

Overdue PAYE

Thanks for your replies.

After just 50 minutes on hold I got through to an adviser. The problem was that I was claiming Employment Allowance but I hadn't yet submitted my EPS so my accounts software was deducting EA from my bill but HMRC were expecting the Employers' NICs to be paid, hence the deficit.

The £700 credit was what was left from my May payroll bill after the rest had been allocated to the shortfall in the April payment.

Thanks again for your help and advice.

Glad you got it sorted and thanks for letting us know what the issue was.

What to provide a social media person

The conversion rate for us was 0%. I am not using social media to generate business. The person we had historically was good, but lets be honest, if its not cupcakes or something tangible, social media is not ideal.

It is more as a way to build up trust and show we are a genuine reputable company etc. Our social media recently has posts about the local duck race where we entered a duck for example Nothing even mortgage related, more things tying us to the local area.

That's the right perspective to have when it comes to social media marketing in the mortgage industry, your goals should be related to brand-building rather than lead generation.

Impulse buys in the mortgage industry are non existent. People spend months, sometimes years making their decision, it's an industry driven mainly by referrals, trust, and various financial metrics, so a 0% conversion from Instagram or Facebook doesn't necessarily mean a failed social media campaign.

The duck race post is exactly the kind of thing that works for your industry. You're not trying to directly sell a mortgage via your posts, instead you're making sure that when someone locally thinks "we need a mortgage advisor" you're the business that comes to mind.

This is why understanding marketing funnels and creating a content mix based on strategy rather than improvising is always the right approach, you don't have to outsource it, you just have to add some thought to it and not do it for the sake of doing it.

When is a spreadsheet not a spreadsheet?

Apparently because of the size of the dataset. There is an article on the register about it.
Sorry, to clarify my point, Libreoffice can deal with datasets that size, its only Google Sheets that cannot.

The Register article also says this:

There's also a regulatory hurdle that has "nothing to do with the functionality of Google." Military-classified documents can't be stored in the cloud, forcing those teams to stay on on-premises Microsoft software for the time being.

So a European company has to use MS for security reasons? 🤦‍♂️

It looks like Google Sheets was a terrible choice for them. LibreOffice or Only Office/Euro-Office would be a better one.

Making Tax Digital without an accountant or bookkeeper?

I have just looked at the video on YouTube. It strikes me that, compared to FreeAgent (Other packages are available) this spreadsheet solution is woefully lacking. I want links to bank accounts, reconciliation, invoicing, Conformance with future regulation etc. The spreadsheet shown in the video is manually data entry heavy, At best a partial solution, Not future proof and does not follow the normal business flow I would not dream of using something like this

Feedback on our website

The website clearly communicates its value, but the visual layout and branding could be improved to better reflect a high-end agency. Right now, the page relies heavily on repetitive block layouts and inconsistent spacing, which disrupts the reading flow and makes the overall presentation feel unorganized.
Additionally, the color palette lacks harmony, as the red logo sticks out rather than feeling integrated with the website's neutral and secondary accent colors.

Everyday users might not mark this as a major issue or consciously notice what is wrong, but because of my developer profession, these structural alignment and color inconsistencies immediately grabbed my attention. Streamlining the layout grid and refining the color system around a unified palette would instantly bridge that gap, making the site look flawlessly premium to professionals and trustworthy to ordinary visitors alike.

What do you want to know about using AI in business?

Wow, a lot of good responses here. Thanks to everyone who has contributed. It's given me a lot to think about, and I can see there are a few misconceptions about AI that I'll need to address in the book.

In the meantime...

Here's an article I wrote and recently posted on LinkedIn, but it's worth reposting it here - and yes, I did use ChatGPT to help me write it, but I went through, edited and corrected it before posting.

What Every Business Leader Should Know About AI (But Probably Doesn’t)

You’ve probably heard a lot about AI by now. It’s in the news. It’s in your inbox, and it’s probably popping up in your team meetings too.

But here’s the truth…

Most business leaders are talking about AI, but very few are actually using it well — and that’s a pity, because AI isn’t just a passing trend. Used the right way, it can save time, boost productivity and help you reach more people with less effort. Let’s break it down — in plain English — so you know exactly what to pay attention to (and what to ignore).

🤖 AI Is Not Magic — It’s a Tool
A lot of people think AI is some kind of robot that does everything for you. That’s not how it works.
AI is like a super-clever assistant. It can help you write, edit, plan, and create — but only if you give it clear direction. If you put in weak input, you get weak results. Just like hiring the wrong person for a job, giving AI vague instructions leads to bad outcomes. If you're familiar with javascript, look-up JSON AI prompts, it's based on the type of formatting used there and can give AI very specific instructions. When you learn to ask better questions, and give it the right prompts, AI becomes an incredibly powerful tool. It can’t do everything, though. There are (and always will be) areas that require the human touch.

🎥 AI Video: Fast, But Not Always Clever
One of the most exciting uses for AI is video creation.
Today, AI tools can:
• Turn blog posts into videos for posting on YouTube and other social media
• Create animated explainers from your script
• Auto-generate subtitles, cuts, and captions
• Even clone your voice or create avatars.
Yet here's where most businesses go wrong: They create a video just because they can — not because it actually fits a strategy. A poor-quality video, even made fast, still sends the wrong messages, and that can hurt your brand more than help it.

🚀 What AI Can Do for Businesses
Used well, AI can:
✅ Save hours of production time
✅ Repurpose old content into something fresh
✅ Help you reach more customers with less cost
✅ Build trust and authority — quickly

With AI video for example: You don’t need a full film crew, you need a clear message, the right tools and someone who understands both. Imagine this: Instead of a 3-week video project, you turn around a polished explainer in 3 days. Not with gimmicks, but with real value. That’s the power of combining strategy + AI.

🔍 So What Should You Do?
If you’re a business leader, you don’t need to become an AI expert, but you do need to understand how it can help you grow.
Here’s what I recommend:
1. Start Small – Pick one area of your business to test AI tools. (Video, customer service, email, etc.)
2. Stay Strategic – Don’t just use AI for the sake of using it. Know what it’s for and what it should do.
3. Get Help – Find someone who knows the tools and knows messaging. That’s where the real results happen.

🎯 Want Help Figuring It Out?
I offer a free AI Video Health Check where I:
• Review your current content
• Identify where AI could save you time
• Suggest simple ways to improve your messaging using video
It’s quick, no strings attached — and often leads to a big “a-ha” moment.
👉 Just message me and I’ll send the details.

🧭 Final Thought: Don't Get Left Behind
AI isn’t going away. The businesses that learn how to use it well will win more attention, build more trust and grow faster — while everyone else is still trying to catch up. This isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about working better. You don’t need to do everything, but you do need to do something. So start here, start now, and start with clarity over hype.
The mention of structured JSON prompting is a massive takeaway here. Most business owners treat LLMs like a magic mirror from a fairytale rather than a database that needs clear syntax. We started testing structured frameworks for our internal content last quarter, and the shift in quality was night and day.

However, there’s a hidden trap nobody warns you about: the "human editing tax." As you mentioned, you had to thoroughly edit the ChatGPT output. A lot of managers get caught off guard when they realise they’ve essentially hired a hyper-enthusiastic, unpaid intern who writes beautifully but occasionally makes things up with absolute confidence. The real skill in 2026 isn't just prompting; it's knowing how to be a ruthless Editor-in-Chief to your own AI tools.

Solid practical advice overall, especially on starting with small, isolated tasks. Best of luck with the book!

BUSINESS IMROVEMENT DISTRICTS - Anyone done one?

I'm in a small town reaching the end of its first (and hopefully last) term. Lots of talk, lots of inaction, helped through its initial vote by the council having 40 of 310 votes. Next to no engagement by the 'board' pre vote meaning an exceptionally low vote turnout. No concrete ideas from day one, other than 'itll be great'. Five years on and 2/3 of a million pounds of other peoples money later we have nothing but being frittered away, we have stickers on bins and an a4 map. If they're trying to move into your town, fight them tooth and nail.

Selling shares of my company

As @kordan.walker says these are all matters to be negotiated and contained in a Shareholders Agreement (plus possibly also in a Directors Service Agreement). But I fear from how you write that you have already done the dela and are now a 45% shareholder with no Shareholder Agreement, Obviously if so you are now in a weak position to negotiate a fair arrangement. Having said that I can advise how to negotiate from here and guide you into presenting a reasonable Shareholders Agreement that is fair and attractive to both parties.

You can take up a free call as in my sig below.

I want to close a 0-T.O company. Accountants ignore but still charge us. What is the best way to fire a rocket up their arses?

I have a company that, as a result of Covid and the general downturn of that market, plus the restructuring of that market, is no longer viable. The company is asset-rich and I need to dispose of those assets in as tax-efficient a manner as possible. I have asked them twice to come up with a plan. Twice they have ignored me. What is the best way to grab these people by the scruff of the neck and shake them?

When you say they have ignored you how have you contacted them?

Do they generally respond promptly to emails or calls?

Anyone looked into reclaiming unlawful US duties sending with PDDP Royal mail?

Can't find anyone talking about this online but there must be many businesses who paid big unlawful tariffs who would like to see those funds returned to them.

looks like the individual or company has to do it themselves, rather than Royal mail.
Dealing with international duties is always a headache. Doing it manually sounds exhausting.

Seeking Ideas, Partnerships & Growth Strategies

Hi there, I’m Juan, founder of fabfestivals, a go-to online platform for festival lovers and organisers across the UK, Spain and beyond — a vibrant hub where music, culture, and unforgettable live experiences come together.

For fans, we provide everything they need to stay connected to the festival scene: line-ups, breaking news, insider updates, reviews, and exclusive insights into the most exciting events.

For organisers, FabFestivals is far more than a listing platform. It’s a powerful promotional tool that allows them to manage their own pages, increase visibility, boost attendance, and build meaningful connections with their audiences.

The platform is already gaining strong traction, with thousands of visits and growing engagement, as organisers actively share PR and updates to reach wider audiences.

At this stage, I’m looking for ideas, partnerships, and guidance on how to further monetise and grow the platform in a sustainable way. We’ve already introduced a feature where organisers can claim and manage their festival pages for a small fee, but uptake has been limited since moving away from the original free model. I’m now exploring new revenue opportunities, engagement strategies, and ways to create more value for organisers while continuing to grow the audience and community around FabFestivals.
It sounds like you've already achieved something many platforms struggle with — attracting both an audience and industry participation.

My first thought is that organisers will usually pay when they can clearly see a return on investment. Instead of charging simply to manage a page, could you offer premium features such as featured listings, enhanced promotion, email campaigns, lead generation, or detailed visitor analytics?

You may also want to explore affiliate revenue from ticket sales, accommodation, travel, or festival-related products.

Out of interest, do you know where most of your traffic is coming from, and whether festival-goers are returning regularly or mainly visiting when searching for a specific event?

New here, Startup on an AI automation Business

Hi everyone,

Just started up my business and my main mission is to automate your communications. I am wanting to work with business owners to understand their challenges and where we can optimise their communications with potential customers to ensure no revenue is ever lost. it be great to get some thoughts on experienced business owners on what they would love to see in an AI receptionist
Congratulations on the new venture.

From a business owner's perspective, I'd be less interested in the AI itself and more interested in the problems it solves.

For me, an AI receptionist would need to:

• Answer calls quickly and naturally
• Capture accurate contact details every time
• Qualify enquiries before they reach the team
• Book appointments directly into a calendar
• Handle common questions without human intervention
• Escalate urgent enquiries appropriately
• Provide a transcript or summary after each interaction
• Integrate with existing CRM systems

One area I'd be cautious about is ensuring customers can easily reach a human when needed. A lot of people become frustrated when they feel trapped in an automated system.

It may also be worth focusing on specific industries initially. The needs of a plumber, solicitor, estate agent and dental practice can be very different, and a tailored solution may be easier to sell than a generic AI receptionist.

Out of interest, have you identified a particular type of business that loses the most revenue from missed calls or slow response times? That might help you refine the offer further.

Where to spend marketing budget?

Hi everyone, I'm Robbie, the founder of a start up clothing brand called Quest. My Hero / first product is ultra comfortable Bamboo Viscose boxers shorts and the brand is aimed towards people with an active lifestyle as the product features of the boxers are perfect for activities such as running, cycling, gym etc (or any where a gentleman may need additional support).

So far sales are okay, but I am struggling to figure out where is best to utilise marketing budget. I am running paid ads on Instagram (Facebook seemed to have very little ROI). I am spending on Google Ads words, but it is getting quite expensive with cost per click. I am dabbling with micro influencers too with minor success.

If anyone has any thoughts, advice or tips I'd be very happy to hear it!

Many thanks,

Robbie
Hi Robbie,

It sounds like you've already tested a few channels rather than putting all your eggs in one basket, which is a good start.

My first thought would be to dig into where your existing customers are actually coming from and double down on what's already working. A lot of clothing brands burn through ad spend trying to find new customers when there may be opportunities to improve conversion rates, repeat purchases and referrals from existing ones.

Given your target market, I'd be interested to know whether you've explored partnerships with running clubs, cycling groups, gyms or sports events. The product seems to solve a specific problem, which can sometimes perform better through communities and recommendations than broad advertising.

With Google Ads, are you bidding on highly competitive generic terms? If so, it might be worth looking at more specific long-tail keywords focused on comfort, support, running, cycling, etc., as the CPCs can sometimes be more manageable.

Also, do you have a Google Business Profile set up? Even as an e-commerce brand, I've seen some businesses use it effectively to build trust, collect reviews and gain a bit of additional visibility in search results.

Out of interest, which channel has produced your best cost per acquisition so far?

Where’s the best place to do market research?

I’m a qualified careers coach with a decade of experience in Higher Education.
I’ve been wanting to set up my own business for some time now and am thinking about pitching it to parents, especially given the latest Milburn report. Thinking about offering:
  • Career planning for teenagers
  • University and apprenticeship decision support
  • Graduate job search coaching
  • LinkedIn and CV reviews
  • Interview preparation
  • Parent consultations
But I need to know whether parents would actually pay for this.

Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.
I think some parents would definitely pay for this, particularly those who feel out of touch with the current graduate job market, apprenticeships, or university admissions process.

The bigger challenge may be identifying exactly who the buyer is and what problem you're solving for them. Career planning, CV reviews, interview coaching and parent consultations all sound useful, but they may appeal to different audiences at different stages.

If I were in your position, I'd consider testing demand with a more focused offer first. For example, helping Year 11-13 students decide between university, apprenticeships and direct employment, or helping final-year students secure their first graduate role.

You already have a strong advantage in having 10 years of relevant experience. Before investing heavily in a business launch, it might be worth speaking to parents directly, running a few paid pilot sessions, and seeing which services generate the most interest and referrals.

It sounds like a logical extension of the work you're already doing, and I'd be interested to hear what feedback you get from parents.

Bringing a range of cordial drinks to life

Hi guys,

I have an exciting idea for a range of cordial juices which I would like to start producing.

I have no experience in this area and looking for recommendations on where to go to start formulating and taste testing . I know I could probably start formulating and testing at home but think I probably be wasting my time.

Ideally I would to find the right company to help start formulating and potentially producing the finished product for me.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Have a great weekend 😊
Sounds like an exciting project.

Before spending too much on formulation, it may be worth doing some initial testing yourself to get a clearer idea of the flavours, sweetness levels and target market you're aiming for. Even rough prototypes can help when discussing the concept with professionals later.

Once you've validated the idea, I'd look for a food and beverage product development consultant or a contract manufacturer that offers formulation services. Many can help with recipe development, shelf-life testing, compliance, and eventually production if the product proves viable.

You may also want to consider:
• Who your target customer is
• Whether you're aiming for concentrates, ready-to-drink products, or both
• Expected shelf life
• Packaging requirements
• Minimum production runs and budget

Hopefully someone with direct experience in the drinks industry can recommend specific companies, but those would be the areas I'd focus on first.

Good luck with it and keep us updated on how you get on.

Potential London Address

It goes without saying that I/we would use Jeremy Hawke Couriers!

Is it about perception?

Do your clients really care where you are based?

If I were after an immediate service, psychologically, I might be more inclined to use a business whose office is near me, regardless of it were virtual or not.

If I am in the City and you are at Heathrow, will you be coming from Heathrow to pick up (takes time) or locally (there in minutes)?

Assuming that for passing trade, one searches the internet, landing pages are created to make clients think you are local,

Clean energy startup idea from Finland

Yeah, that's actually anti-communist you total idiot. You probably prefer state monopolized nuclear power like a Chinese communist. You have contributed absolutely nothing but worthless garbage and waste of my time with your totally idiotic comments. My statements are not wrong. You're just a vile and stupid communist who doesn't understand anything and you deliberately just harassing my perfectly upright effort. What are you going to do if i insult you in your face communist chimpanzee boy?
If you haven't the intelligence to participate in reasoned debate you would be better off saying nothing rather than advertising your stupidity like this.
