I predicted this 5 years ago, many laughed, but look at it now.......

MS Sbd.bcentral closed on November 15, 2006 - shame as it was only $50. :(:(:(

Zeal.com acquired by LookSmart in October 2000 for $20 million. Closed on 28 March 2006.

Yahoo UK Ireland to close on Nov 2010

some big names there

Well, my crystal ball says expect much expansion in the search world, with video in particular and the increase in free services (not necessarily in search)

Also expect the demise and/or acquisitions of directories with decent sized databases, to be incorporated into existing directory leader's sites or added to new 'Super Portal websites'.

'user generated content' websites come into play too.

Hmmm, i think it's a directory that has had a lot of emphasis on it being good, but it does not deliver a fantastic seo boost at all, there are even sites i outrank that are in dmoz.

I don't think they are needed, and you can achieve good results without these "powerful" directories.

I think it is worth it. Its trustworthy and reliable, and it has been around for a long time. It is quite expensive compared to other directories but I think it is worth a shot.

$299 yearly is a lot to shell out for what is really only a general directory link.

Advertisers will now look elsewhere, and with business.com being pricey, is there enough choice out there? I say no, there's only 2 choices left for the UK:

Yell.com

Local Sponsored Listing - Position 1
Marketing & Advertising Consultants
Classification Price Band: 3
London Central

price £2770.00

and thats not even National campaign, it only covers 1 local county.

Thomson Local

Doesn't state its prices on its website. Why not?

......so its clear to all that general directory advertising is too expensive. And the high fees will drive advertisers away.

I wouldn't say people paid $299 for traffic in most cases they just paid because they thought it was good seo wise.

I dont think there are many people that go " i need this, i better go look on the yahoo directory" , and the same for dmoz, who actually uses dmoz to look for anything :| and its supposed to be the best directory on the web?

Sure! Although Google has become the 1,000 lb gorilla' for web search, YAHOO! is still widely used worldwide. Considering the use of their webmail progam, the popular IM program, RSS feed reader, and many other bells and whistles they offer, people will keep coming back to search YAHOO! for their personal and business needs time and time again.

mmmm, seen many threads about Yahoo dir being 'really great' and adding benefits blah, blah - but I think these are mostly webmaster kids seeing this link as an authority link maybe? ,when its not. And it seems that bcos opinions vary so much, and the fact Yahoo just shut down its UK & Ireland version, and the fact that their directory link is hidden from the homepage, that the value is now minimal, whether its SERP or taffic - its on its way out!

So logically, getting rid of the huge UK user base, doesn't show confidence of this side of their operations. When things close down, its usually a sign of difficulty or something not working.

How big is UK business? 2 million businesses currently operating? and they won't be using or interested in Yahoo dir bcos they'll never know about it or see it again. But if the UK side of Yahoo dir was trading okay, then why hide the main link to it - this sounds like lack of pride in it than anything else.

I have a couple of sites listed and will continue to do so even though two of the three links for each site will disapear next month when the UK and Ireland directory close.

Not a magic bullet by any means, but worth it if you have the budget in my opinion.

I spent $300 in my early days of learning web marketing. If it was now I would have use that money for something else.

For some businesses it does help though. Lets say you are selling something, probably its better to get included then. I would rather get the premium listing instead of the regular one.

As per traffic Yahoo Directory contributes very little. In the beginning I have had some traffic, now-a-days almost zero.

Google itself encourages people get included in Yahoo Directory. I don't remember the url, but I have seen that myself. So I guess it helps determine authority of a site to some extent.

I just had yahoo on the phone to me. I had tried to register for their equivalent of google places some months ago.

Any directory which feels the need to:
  • pester new businesses with phone calls,
  • lie about what they are actually selling (sponsored listings not the map listings I enquired about),
  • not appreciate the size of the business they are dealing with (I am a part time bookkeeper not TESCO!),
  • delay your free listings if you don't sign up!
  • Then charge £500 for what google offers for free

... is even more delusional than my mother!
