If my boss asks me if I would go work away should I be able to get more hourly from him? I'm on £12.50 an hour and I've I have all my tools and experience but I think that I deserve more than that? Can anyone help me? Tia

Your hourly rate will not change but you may be able to claim expenses: food, accommodation, travel costs.

Speak to your union rep about this.

Its a commercial business. Negotiate with your employer if you feel you deserve more, but be prepared to have evidence of why (what are similar jobs paying elsewhere etc) - this is really important! If you are a valuable employee they may be happy to negotiate, however if you are easily replaceable at that hourly rate, why would they pay you more?

As has been suggested, you are best off talking to your union. This is a forum for business owners and you will get responses from thay perspective.

I think (but stand to be corrected) that they now have to pay you for travelling time
That depends. Travelling between jobs must be paid time. Travelling to and from the first and last jobs is arguable.

When our lads work away they get paid their full hourly rate. I know other places might pay one way, or an allowance of say 25p per mile. Years ago, when I was still on the tools, we didnt get paid anything for travel - a bitter pill when it was 4 hours on a Monday and similar coming home on the Friday afternoon.

We also pay the digs and a £25 per night allowance so they can get a bite out and a couple of pints. But again, other companies do it different for example, giving £100 a night but you have to find your own digs. The cheaper you get, the more you have for your evening meal or to pocket the rest.

Without knowing what you do, I would say your hourly rate does sound low though. I am assuming youre a skilled craftsman given you have your own tools.

If it's further than the usual place of work, I would expect to be paid mileage for at least the difference. That's how it always worked when I was a wage slave.
Unfortunately the law is silent. Many employees send a team away for a week, with perhaps 4 hours travelling time out on Monday and back on Friday. Many pay mileage but not travelling time. I used to try to get them to visit the base forst to pick something up or dip it off, that way they are travelling within work.

Have you discussed it with your boss and explained to him that you feel you should be paid a higher rate?
