Wix Ecommerce

We are looking to build a website with an ecommerce function and torn whether to you Wix or not. It has all the functionality we need (i think) and scores very well in all reviews I read but, developers and industry people all say its crap. Now i know they have improved it a lot over the last few years so is it a case of these people being misinformed/out of touch/threatened by it or are all the reviews wrong?

The items are low margin so going for a some of the bigger players that need specialist web dev help isn't viable.

Appreciate all views.

It's going to draw a lot of negative answers on here I'm afraid. Your content can only be hosted on Wix and therefore if you decide to move elsewhere at some point you will need to start again (no import of files possible). Payment options for UK merchants at least are also limited (and no ApplePay option without some heavy coding)

Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix. Don't use wix.

All the reviews were written by wix fanboys. Ignore them.

As I mentioned a couple days ago the ones with the best marketing budget get the business but this only tells you they have a big marketing budget

With low margin products you are limited what you cab do unless you are generating massive volume. Those with very efficient distribution channels and other significant sources of income are obviously in prime position to take over. *Pun intended.

Very few businesses use WIX, it may be a simply platform but it is not scalable and if your business takes off you will miss the features of other platform. I am hearing good thinks about Bluepark, also EKM and we use Shopify which is okay and has a lot of features.

I guess it depends on how many product lines you have and whether you think it will grow. A family member of mine, for example, runs a small business using the wizard built shop provided by site123 which I think is a Wix esque alternative. I wouldn't use it as my experience is in X-cart and now Woocommerce which takes a lot of effort to develop and maintain but is configurable and exportable if/when the time comes.

In car terms, it is a Nissan Micra. It will get you from A to B but you can forget about getting from A to C. If you are looking to grow the business (which I am sure you are) you will outgrow Wix very very quickly and realize the limitations it has as a platform. Using the car analogy you will think it is great getting around town but when you need to see a relative that is an hour's drive away the pitfalls will soon become clear. It would be better to go for something like Wordpress or if you are going down the ecommerce route then Shopify. Hope that helps. Alex

So Wix, the Nissan Micra, will get you where you want easily, cheapy and without a problem? Not sure your analogy is a good one here.

Wix really isn't the best option when it comes to ecommerce. There are a couple of things such as lack of payment gateway options and not being able to update your inventory in bulk, but the main issue with Wix is the performance.

Wix sites with Wix stores app install perform really badly, 5+ second load times, which is bad from a ranking and customer experience perspective.

The only real positive with Wix is the ADI tool for customising the look of your website. Gives more options than the majority of tools out there. Other than that though, it isn't really worth considering. Much better options out there such as EKM and Shopify, for not much more money. I've reviewed all of these if you want to check them out

Where did I say there would be no problem? Wix is cheap and easy to set up which makes it inviting but like everyone on this thread, I agree that it isn't very good. The analogy was more that a Nissan Micra is terrible for long-distance driving and in website terms, this is exactly right. It can be used as a holding website but if you are looking to grow the business it is terrible. Hence why my analogy makes perfect sense. Alex

It's a crap analogy as the Nissan Micra does long distance drives easily (any car does these days) - I did thousands of miles in mine.

Well you heard it here first folks - if you drive a Nissan Micra, Wix is definitely the platform for you! :D:D:D

My Mum had a Micra at one point and I can 110% say it does not do well over long distance so I disagree completetly! Alex
