Will responsive websites lead to a web design boom?

THe be all and end all is that people browse websites on their phones differently to the way that they browse using a desktop/laptop. That's why we design variants of a website for every given medium :) ..... client's budget permitting of course :D

So what do you think about this comment...

But 80+% of users use mobiles and tablets in the home.

You can't assume you know the context which a mobile or tablet device is being used.

To these users, by giving them trimmed down content you are preventing them from seeing all your information.

What you should be doing through the responsive design process, is auditing your content and only delivering the most succinct, potent content to everyone.

What is the use in delivering an optimised experience to only mobile users? What about desktop users? Is the rest of the un-optimised content crap? 9 times out of 10, yes.

Be nice if some of these mobile versions of websites actually worked!

I have found myself abandoning some sites because either a button doesnt work properly in a mobile version or the 'Switch to full site' function doesnt work.

Or the most infuriating things are the sites that throw up a pop up for the full site for a survey or something, designed for a ful sized screen that repositions it self on your mobile so that you cant close it to access the web site!

immediate switch to another site, epic fail!

Personally I am dreading it and I think I will pull the plug on my business when it gets to this stage. I have a smart phone but to me the browsing experience on it is dreadful compared to my PC or laptop. Unfortunately all the signs are that I am soon to be in the minority.

Anyone want to buy a web design business? ;)

.

I personally think its easier now to develop for Responsive design using tools like Bootstrap. When looking around me all I see are people using mobiles to surf the web but its mainly Facebook and twitter. Over the past few years the emphasis has been on separate mobile site but now google prefers responsive I can see the tide turning. It makes sense as no multiple sites to admin and no updates to user agents.

BDW how much for the business ;)

You are right about FB and Twitter. I hardly ever see anyone using it for anything else (other than perhaps news, sports results and information).

For the business? Make me an offer. ;)

Hi - we provide business mobiles, services and tech support to business customers in the UK.

The reason that I mention that is we are seeing a huge uptake on smartphone web usage and app installations within the SME market.

A couple of years ago this started with director level customers wanting IPhones - it has now cascaded to the general workforces having Android low end smartphones and taking advantage of what they can do.

We are based in rural Suffolk and you'd be amazed at businesses that are using smartphones - it's absolutely exploding - as is mobile web usage.

I admit that the experience is different but that is absolutely not slowing the increase in mobile web usage in businesses at least.

The basic phones will stay but I see the days of the feature phones being numbered.

Hope that helps
Chris
