Is there any benefit to be listed on Wikipedia?

Hi,

If you are referring to your company then you won't be listed unless you are a high profiled business. We have tried but got told the same thing.

I don't think there would be. You'd need to keep an eye on it in the case someone goes on there and enters a post about your company that is just wrong. Unless you have a medium to large organisation I wouldn't bother.

high profiled companies are listed only. Wikipedia isn't a reliable website anyway as anyone can edit it

Have you tried this Robert, as we have been directly on their live chat and queried them and they have said only high profile. Of course, if the owners of the site are wrong, then need something to prove that they are wrong

Wikipedia is not built for small businesses. Why would small businesses possibly need an entry in an online wiki? It doesn't really make sense.

The purpose of Wikipedia is to provide unbiased information about topics that are being searched for by a large number of people.

There is absolutely no gain in a small business being listed on Wikipedia, simply because people are not searching wikis for information related to that business's history etc.

One of the companies I founded about 7 years ago has a Wikipedia page (which is still up), even though the company is now defunct. That business quickly grew into a multinational medium sized business, and thus the Wikipedia page was created, written and updated by a number of random people who weren't connected with the business at all (i.e. customers/users of the online service). The takeaway is: never create a Wikipedia page about your own business. If your business is big enough to warrant a Wikipedia page, a member of the public somewhere will create it. That's really the sign that your business needs one and has enough history or recognition for one.

It would just look silly for a small high street business to have a Wikipedia page...
