What's the must-have software for your PC?

Any UKBFers know of a list of must-have applications every new PC should have?

Obviously this is open to debate, I'm referring to an average user rather than someone uber-techy. Something like this: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/maximum_pcs_32_totally_essential_apps

I don't like THAT one.

9.04 was OK but 9.10 is not doing anything for my carbon footprint as it won't recover from standby on my PC. It seems to have a few other quirks too that weren't present in it's predecessor.

For free word processing etc try Openoffice, put in google and you will find it easy enough.

That's interesting to know. Still 9.04 here, and I had been wondering.

What you describe is almost certainly hardware dependent, and unless you want to spend a lot of time on it, probably best left as the chances are it will disappear at the next release.

And to come back on topic, hands up, yes it was about applications!

That's what I am hoping!

As for the applications THE one I couldn't live without is Visual Studio (on my Windows machines obviously!).

netbeans for OO coding

geany for procedural coding and for quick file edits

From lower down the 'puter food chain, I'm not happy with 9.10 either. First upgrade crashed totally, and various hickies appear.

Apps: Still haven't found a replacement for OneNote, even Evernote isn't quite there.
BTW, I do like the look of Ninite, although as I already had what I wanted I haven't used it, (its an app loader).

These are all good freebies

Irfanview, a handy little program for resizing images and changing file formats.

Audacity, an excellent free audio editing and recording package.

Openoffice, a free alternative to MS Office, not a good, but it's free.

FoxIT reader, it's an alternative to Adobe Acrobat reader, with a lot less junk.

Music Cube, excelent music manager and player.

Video Lan, will play any video file known on the face of this earth.

As for as applications are concerned it depends on your need but few are most important:
Good antivirus
updated browser
mdia player
and so on but do not make your pc like a junk yard of applications only install required applications.
