Hi Jason
I didn't properly answer your question.

articles bring in good traffic and quickly, especially if they get used by others for their sites which happened with 2 of mine! press release is a favourite too, you tube.

cheers

I only tried Yahoo answers and forum posting. So far with this two, forum posting is better than yahoo answers, that's based on my experience. In forum posting there are lots of active members who can view your advertisement. I saw lots of people who put their signature as a link to website and that's a good way of advertising.

I also use UKSBD and have been really impressed.

Thanks UKSBD :)

This discussion is really interesting and am learning loads. I am a very small business and don't have the capital to go down the professional PR advertising route yet.

I have been feeling a bit down about it all as getting traffic and customers is a difficult one, so thanks for a great thread.

Agree UKSBD will get you visitors. I see a few hits each day from there to my Airia.co.uk site
Check out Alexa.com to see how popular UKSBD has become and view it's damn good traffic rank!
Also, make sure you get a Free Entry into the DMOZ web directory (google it to find it!) - This will be the best bit of free SEO you will do.............

a few people have mentioned exchanging links but the company we used to create our website suggested that this doesn't look very professional and advised us not to have a links page.. however I can defnitely see the benefit if using reputabel companies.. I'd be interested to hear peoples views on this..

I had a site where a reciprocal links exchange program was in place. The page link was discreetly hidden away on the front page, but those who wanted to find it (i.e. similar minded webmasters) would find it.
It Works! Takes time & effort, but good.
Go for similar companies & you will see the benefits, both in Page Rank & your position in Google. I managed to get a PR of 4 within a few months, about 30 links.
Another site I had where I didn't put enough effort in showed poorer results in Google search.
Webmasters know the benefits & good like minded sites will always exchange links. When you get a good PR, people come to you for links!.

The best free online advertising starts with capturing people's names and email addresses (or through RSS) when they visit your website. Once you have done this contact your customers on a regular basis.

A few other ways of advertising and generating higher traffic numbers to your website is by using social media:

* Stumbleupon
* Digg
* Twitter

Wow this thread really took off!

SEO topics were bound to come up in this thread, and thank you to everyone whos asked some interesting questions and had them answered by some very in tune seo experts we have on this site. All their information is always more than handy.

On the subject of SEO and due to the time of the year, i've just posted a blog posting about getting your site in order for 2009 (if you have a bit of expected, or planned for 'downtime') http://smuvrd.wordpress.com/2008/12/29/a-good-time-to-get-your-site-in-order/

There are some useful links that you may not have seen before or used, along with some other information sources from google itself (Matt Cutts Head of Webspam) on seo techniques.

I'm going to be using this time as effectively as possible (as always) and posting as many blogs as I can write - although when writing blogs it helps when you get some feedback - so if you would like to know more in-depth information about social media marketing/technology or basics on seo drop me a line, or leave a comment on my blog.

I hope we can continue this thread and get lots more free tips for advertising and getting business online through 'no cost' methods.

Strategic joint ventures are one of the fastest and most profitable ways to get free advertising. Approach companies/websites who have built responsive lists of your target audience, and offer them a healthy commission percentage to promote your product/service to their list.

For example,

If you're targeting business owners, then approach accountants and lawyers.

Although this can be classed as paid advertising, because you are giving a commission % to the joint venture for each sale made, this is in effect free money because you are reaching customers that you normally woudlnt be able to reach, and once more, the credability of your joint venture will rub off on your product/service offer because they are promoting you.

This method is proven and extremely powerful

Google places is certainly under used by many.

Hoobly is good freebie advertising site, within hours your ad appears high in googles search results if you use a clever heading which is keyword related.

Perhaps the best for us is our blogspot on googles blogger. Not only do customers see real installations and get a better insight into our business but often careful choices of artilce titles can be googled and appear first page within a few minutes of posting.

They may disappear off the radar after a few weeks if competition is strong but we have several which have remained and continue to create referrals to our main site

I've come across lots of companies that have given me stories of free advertising - the type that actually converts.

But does the quality of the leads suffer when you are sourcing customers for free? or does it just take more time than a paid for "big hit" advertising campaign?

What are your stories and results from advertising that did'nt cost a bean but brought business your way?

If own for the company promoting, you can do free promoting with the forum, blog, directory.
If you want to promote your products for free, I would first suggest you to use the free classified ads. Or you can also write your blog which is mainly for the products promoting, but must be professional.
You can also use other social networking methods, facebook, twitter, youtude would be your best choice.

Hi, any chance I could get a PM of the instructions on listing on Gumtree plz? Posting a few ads a week but nothing is coming of it :|

Hiya Neil358

So it is Gumtree?? your post was confusing with upagumtree. Sorry probably just me being stupid. LOL.

Gasangel if you need any help with gumtree I can do that for you.
The key to Gumtree is to post loads of ads every day to really make the most of the 6 million monthly visitors to the site. You will need to know the main demographic and the busiest categories to go at.

Let me know as I have a whole instruction written up in word on exactly how to post hundreds of ads every week on gumtree.
I am in MLM and recruit people every month without spending a penny online.

Happy to help if I can.

I know this thread has not seen any posts in a few years but I think what I have just started is very relevant. I am looking for business owners who want to talk about their business for my online podcasts. This come free to the business taking part and will be supported by others businesses (non conflicting) through sponsors and short ad breaks.

Is this something you would be interested in. The advertising rates will be under £100.

if you want to advertise your business for free online then try to consider not only posting free classified ads but to do a little bit of SEO on those said classified ads...

Free advertising doesn't really come much better than social networking.
Twitter, with tools like Hootsuite, become easily manageable and not too time-consuming, whereas LinkedIn provides you with effective B2B marketing. Facebook has good multimedia potential, whilst the likes of Pinterest are up-and-coming and allow you to be a bit more creative within your business sphere.
Make sure that you're informative, concise and always reply to questions. Humour's also a great tonic for customers - people love to be entertained.

all you have to do is write 300-500 word article focused on a keyword related to your business and include a url at the bottom of the article to your website and you will have heaps of direct visitors to your business website

I disagree most strongly - you will not get heaps of anything. The only ones flogging this are the article salespeople.

Why can't people just get right to the damn point - you will be found out as a salesman, so why all the disguises - yuck

I've been trying all the free sources of advertising I can since about Feb. For the site in my sig, I'm signing the site up to all I can find and seeing what affect it has. Not a great affect when it comes to referrals but I'm not selling anything so that might not be representative but certainly the SEO is gathering speed now.

If anyone finds any decent free places to advertise please let me know.

Stopped looking for free advertising years ago - there's nothing apart from the overused social platforms and a few link swaps available.

We will be concentrating on the free press, some SEO, blogging and whatever low-cost placements we can find eg: related sites, but deep down we know the fees to get on anything decent won't be low cost.

I figure the social sites will end up like article banks, will have so many taking advantage of them and become saturated with advertisers. Facebook have already gone paid, and twitter must surely follow suit. You could have another 20 social sites up in the next 12 months - all will be flooded, then go paid to make money and advertisers will be right back at the start, looking for free places again.

Free places will not remain free, at some point they must make money to keep going.

Facebook is wonderful as a free channel for advertising. Create a business "fan page" different from your personal Facebook page, then get lot of "likes" and your message shared by a large crowd. This will go viral and generate you traffic and sales.
