What's going on please?

Hi All,

For some reason my internet isn't loading up on the laptop this morning - causing much swearing an cursing!

I'm using an orange dongle - which says it's connected up fine - but everytime I try to start IE, I'm getting the following message (tried a number of different pages too!):

waiting for res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm...

I've tried the support 1.1 - and lappie's been booted more often than the Andre's relationship!

Is this a "back to the shop" deal please? Or is it something easy that can resolved from here?

Have you tried clearing your DNS on the laptop, this can be done by going to START> Run and typing in the following ipconfig /flushdns

You will have to then register your dns by typing again in the run command box the following ipconfig /registerdns. If the problem still persists then you may find that it is a problem with oranges DNS servers.

Give them a shout to find out if they have any problems, as I have noticed that Orange get quite a few issues with DNS.

You may also find that you could have spyware on your system or the firewall can be blocking connections, try disable your firewall and see if error goes is so then you will have to configure your firewall correctly.

Also try running an anti spyware on your system to see if that helps.

Bought a lot of PCs over the years. As far as I know, PCs & Laptops should work exactly the same, boot up the same, use the same hardware and software etc.

You bought this from Orange? not the phone network provider? Er, they aren't known as computer manufacturers nor suppliers of them.

Return it to the retailer and get an exchange, or you can find yourself wasting much time calling tech support guys, finding out what DNS ERROR means, and getting nowhere, whilst paying phone charges of up £20. I think I know what this stands for and its Domain Name Server ERROR, which is to do with website settings, but this being on your laptop is strange, as laptops don't tend to display this particular message - yeah, I'd take it back, if it's a recent purchase bcos you only have 2 weeks to fix this problem or it's deemed that you've accepted the purchase and returning after this period makes things trickier to get a refund. I used to sell computers way back, and we got this kind of thing cropping up a lot.

It is not an uncommon error and happens a lot with Internet Explorer 7, are you able to open another browser? Try firefox if you already have it on there. Or download it from somewhere else, stick it on a flash drive and install on your laptop from there. Maybe it's just the browser issue. Some IE7 add-ons are known to cause this as well - are you using any?

Geoff,

Orange broadband (including 3G mobile) have had a major outage of their network, this is why you maybe having problems. I have lost broadband at 23:00 last night and it has only just come back on. Looking at other forums http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1125601

Lost of people around the country are having problems. If you called orange customer service you get a recorded message saying they are having problems and there is no time frame for it to be fixed!

Feel sorry for all the T mobile customers ! do they know what they may be in for when they merge??

This is not the first time it has happened either!, it will be the last for me though, I have requested my MAC code and I am leaving them behind.

I guess, putting this together with the Orange issues, that Orange's DNS servers aren't working. In other words, when you try to go to a website like 'www .google .co. uk', Orange are having difficulties converting that into an IP address.

You might be able to manually resolve this by setting manual DNS settings (e.g. look at opendns), but it might be best to just wait until Orange sort themselves out.

A kind UKBF member called me, and guided me (slowly - he knows what I'm like!:|) through the process above, which seems to have resolved the problem!

now - if you kind folk could just tell me how to get a full day's work done in 1/2 the time - job'll be a good 'un!
